About the Author
My name is Sage –not like the herb, but like an old wise man – Arroway. I prefer the latter (even though I’m not old, or a man) only because I’d like to think of myself as somewhat witty, or at least model myself after someone who is. Joss Whedon is the first of those to come to mind, just in case you were wondering. As a storyteller, I have always loved movies with strong protagonists, clever humor and real life situations – even when the world in which they live is crawling with alien robots, or in this case, werewolves. It’s the human condition to fall in love with characters that you can relate to. So, I strive to write mine with the kind of lovable and redeeming qualities you might find in Holly Golightly, and the undeniable character flaws of Han Solo. Throw in some ruthless politics (like we all experienced this last election season), a compromising situation that’ll make a desperate housewife blush, a dark secret or two and, ladies and gentlemen, you’ve got The Apollo Saga.

Started Good.....Then It Wasn't

So I thought it started off good. Girl hits werewolf with her car, finds sexy naked man, takes him to her cabin and patches him up.....then it gets weird. Tie me up, I'm a werwolf, hey that's cool we all have issues? With lines like "his kiss devoured her face" and the fact that she couldn't remember if her grandma died a year or four years ago, I was not in the mood to finish it, then they started throwing "I love you" around after 2 days together, I gave up the fight. And before people get mad about this review, I do understand that it's fiction and no, I don't write 5 star books. I just know what I like.

Be Prepared to Pick It Up and Not Put It Down!

When you buy this book, make sure you have enough time to finish it because you won't want to put it down!

Sage Arroway has created an engaging world of werewolves, mystery and romance. It reminds me a lot of Twilight (in that it is a werewolf romance), but better since it is without the teenage angst. This is a novel for adults, that real women will be able to relate to!

The story's twists and turns (without giving anything away) are surprising and exciting and will keep you on your toes. The romance between Allison & Tyler is engaging and steamy - all while still being very sweet.

Pick up this book and you too will get swept away into the mystery and excitement of Apollo City...

This took what could have been an interesting idea and wasted it with complete lack of development and rushed...well, everything else. The two characters meet and within a day or so are madly, irrevocably in love. And those romantic feelings come out of nowhere. There is no slow growth or development. They have sex and they are in love. Period. What's worse, one character uses sex to magically cure another. (Though I have to admit it's a bit of a twist on the trope to have a magic vagina instead of a magic penis.)

Annoyingly, the author seems to pretend a character not knowing something is the same thing as a character choosing not mentioning something. Because we're in both characters' heads and [spolier] if you are yourself a werewolf and you run into a naked man in the middle of a snowy forest on the night of a full moon it's going to occur to you that the man might be a werewolf and this does not occur to Allison. We are told what she thinks and that's not among her thoughts then or at any other point. You can't write 80% of the books AS IF she doesn't know something and then suddenly tell the reader she does and expect it to fly. That is not the same as adding a twist to a plot, it's falsifying your story and expecting the reader to just roll with it. Ummm, no.

The baddy is a cliche scorned woman with no depth or development what so ever. And the book basically ends where I would expect the real story to begin.

The writing and editing is fine, other than a few missing words. Maybe I'll give Arroway another shot, but this book was not a winner for me.

Industrial strength, whether you're a consumer or creator of PDF

In short: I've written software that generates and manipulates PDF for several years now, and this book still had more than a few things to teach me.

Adobe Acrobat/Reader is a very complex piece of software, and like many Adobe products, mastery is more an art than a science. Right from the start, this book provides clearly written tips that make master the beast somewhat more manageable. For those who actually write and manipulate PDFs, the later sections will make your life easier at some point, I can say with some certainty.

Well worth it for anyone who has a PDF-intensive workflow.

Also, you can search for "PDFTK", one of the tools discussed in the book, to find the author's site. There are sample hacks you can read in full to get a better idea of the type of content. And there's of course "Look Inside".

If only I had this book three months ago! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to really understand the PDF format and know exactly what can be done with this format. Like the many other excellent O'Reilly "hacks" series, this book provides 100 different tips and tricks that can be used in dealing with the PDF format. Some of these hacks involve creating your own PDFs through third-party tools, others include tips on modifying PDFs after they have been created.

PDF Hacks are divided into four main sections: consuming, managing, authoring, and manipulating PDFs. Some of the hacks are quite interesting and cover things you might not otherwise think of. Once interesting hack is #25, "Convey Your Document's Value with Good Design". This hack actually discusses different issues with fonts including various typography tips and alignment issues. This is certainly an issue I think of rarely, but this hack shows some of the reasons to really think through this issue. There are many such hacks which are quite enlightening.

My favorite part of the book was toward the end, where the author discusses the tool "pdftk", which can be used to freely modify PDF files. The author proceeds to show how this tool can be used to change text within exiting PDF files without significant work. While this hack might not be used by everyone, it illustrates the type of advanced tips this book provides.

Like I said at the beginning of this review, I just wish I had read this book three months ago. After reading this book, the reader will have a much better understanding of the PDF format, as well as having a knowledge of the tools that can be used to extend the PDF format beyond what you might have initially thought possible. If you want to understand the PDF format and what information on how to "hack" your PDFs, then you need a copy of this book!

This is a most amazing story of survival - almost unbelieveable but it did happen. I haven't read the book yet - I happened to catch the movie on tv some years ago and was just fascinated and am anxious to read all about it. Incidentally, it was recently featured in the NY Times Sunday

Incredible, suspenseful, & INSPIRING

This is the story of a group of a dozen Norwegian saboteurs attempting to disguise themselves as fishermen. Eight were piloting the boat and four were to be dropped off in Nazi-occupied Norway. The mission was thwarted and all but one man, Jan Baalsrud, died in the attack. His story is absolutely incredible. He survived in an area covered with snow throughout eleven months of the year. His survival is one of pain, sacrifice (he amputated nine toes in order to prevent gangrene), and inspiration – a true testament to human will.
Howarth completed a great deal of accurate research and presented a marvelous narrative. However, he could have benefited from more complete editing. He may have been trying to rush this work as evidenced by numerous grammatical and spelling errors. However distracting, this is still one of the epic tales of the century.

Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was the 16th president of the United States from 1861 to 1865. Born in a log cabin in the backwoods of Kentucky, Lincoln was practically exclusively self-educated. In 1831 he moved to New Salem, Illinois, and labored as a storekeeper, surveyor, and postmaster while learning the law. In 1834 he was elected to the state legislature, and in 1836 he became an attorney. He served one term from 1847 to 1849 in Congress as a Whig and in 1855 he ran to become a senator but lost. He joined the new Republican Party in 1856. Lincoln ran again in 1858 for the Senate against Stephen A. Douglas, and in a vigorous campaign he and Douglas battled in seven debates. Abraham Lincoln was not an abolitionist, but he deemed slavery as an evil and disputed its expansion. Though he lost the election, he had made a name for himself, and in 1860 he was nominated by the Republicans for president. He ran against a split Democratic Party and was elected with a minority of the popular vote. To the Southern states, Lincoln's election was a sign for secession. By Inauguration Day seven states had seceded, and four more seceded once he issued a summons to the militia. It is largely agreed that Lincoln handled the enormous problems of the Civil War with skillfulness and strength. Besides directing the war, he confronted opposition in the North from radical abolitionists, who believed him too moderate, and from conservatives, who were pessimistic over the possibilities of success in the war. His cabinet was divided by internal animosity, and the progress of the war went against the North initially. In 1863 he proceeded to free the slaves by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, but sustaining the Union remained his foremost war goal. In 1864 Lincoln ran for reelection against George B. McClellan and won, partially because of the satisfactory turn of military affairs after his appointment of General U.S. Grant as commander-in-chief. Lincoln witnessed the end of the war but did not live to realize his plan for Reconstruction. On April 14, 1865, while attending a play at Ford's Theater, in Washington, D.C., he was shot by the famous actor John Wilkes Booth. Abraham Lincoln died the next morning. His wife was Mary Todd Lincoln (1818-1882). Only one of their four sons, Robert Todd Lincoln, reached adulthood.

Lincoln, while mostly self-educated, was a famous orator. As an attorney riding the circuit, a short Congressional career, a highly charged campaign where he debated Stephen Douglas in many locations, and finally his election to the presidency of a crumbling divided union, Lincoln generated a great many memorable quotes.

This book is inexpensive, but it neither claims or is exhaustive. Also, the material is not really very well categorized -- so you do have to hunt around a bit to get the quote you want.

So decide if there is a better book for your needs or buy this one if your use is more for entertainment and amusement than something perhaps more scholarly.

About the Author
Kathryn M. Fisher is a 71-year old widow with one daughter Nelda, and two grandsons Jason and Joshua. Born in High Point, North Carolina, Kathy spent most of her life in California. In 1988 she and her husband returned to North Carolina and to her current home in Kernersville.

Paid $2.00 for her first poem, Kathy was inspired to write many more, including That Woman, which won the 1997 Editor’s Choice Award from the National Library of Poetry. She has also written several hymns, which have been performed in area churches and retirement homes.

Kathryn has twice won the prize for best article in Writer to Writer magazine. Additionally, she won best story in Writer to Writer’s Cliché Contest. She is a member of the Triad Writers Roundtable and "The Murder We Write" chapter of Sisters-in-Crime. Kathryn’s next project involves writing a love story and working on an outline for a murder mystery.

A heartwarming memoir by Kathryn Fisher

I just finished reading Up a Tree With Tatie Wee, a memoir by Kathryn Fisher. I really loved the book. She had many tribulations throughout her life but she faced them with courage and humor. I laughed with her and then cried with her, too, at the difficult times she endured, particularly at her relationship with an abusive father. She drew strength from her many friends who she cherished, and her loving daughter, Nelda, who inherited her Mother's loving ways. I laughed at the antics of Kathy and her husband, Art, when they were with friends. I couldn't help shedding a few tears when disaster struck them. I definitely recommend this book.

An Unsual LIfe Story

This brave little woman has held back nothing in telling her life story. It will make you laugh in some places and it will make you cry in others, but through it all you will admire the honesty and wit of this charming lady. You are in for a treat when you get Up A Tree With Tatie Wee.
