The custom thus established in the Occident spread rapidly; particularly through the efforts of St. Chrysostom, who makes mention of it in one of his sermons as early as 386. Fifty years later it was introduced into Egypt. Here, how¬ever, it came into collision with the feast of Epiphany, which was already celebrated, as the feast of the birth and baptism of Christ, on the 6th of January, the birthday of Osiris, the Egyptian sun-god.

In Germany the Christmas holidays appear to have been substituted for the old pagan festival of the "Twelve Nights," which extended from the 25th of December to the 6th of January. The Twelve Nights were religiously observed by numerous feasts, and were regarded by the ancient Germans as among the holiest and most solemn of their festivals. Regarding, in common with other pagan nations, the active forces of nature as living personifications, they symbolized the conflict of natural forces by the battle of the gods and giants. Thus in the old German mythology Winter is represented as the ice-giant, heartless, inexorable, the enemy of all life, and the relentless foe of gods and men. By the aid of his powerful steed Swadilfari, the all-stiffening north wind, he constructs a formidable castle of ice, which threatens to inaugurate the reign of Night and Winter, of Darkness and eternal Death. Then follows the conflict of giants and gods, of Winter with Spring, of North Wind with South Wind, until Thor, the god of the thunder-storm, demolishes with his thunder-stone the castle of the ice-giant, when Freija, the beautiful goddess of spring, resumes her former sway, and life and light and prosperity return.

But the restless giants ever invent new stratagems to regain their lost supremacy. Thum, the prince of the giants, robs the sleeping Thor of his dreaded sledge-hammer, and hides it eight leagues under the earth. This insures the reign of Winter for the eight months of the year when the thunderstorm slumbers, until Thor, accompanied by Loki, the spring wind, again demolishes with his recaptured hammer the castle of the ice-king, when the Winter Storm is again compelled reluctantly to retire. This eternal conflict of the opposing forces of summer and winter frequently occurs under various forms in the German mythology, and constituted one of the most striking features of the old German poesy, as the beautiful legend of Idunna and her apples and the giant Thiassi, in the poem of "Edda."

In the midst of this struggle of the conflicting forces of nature the Germans and other Northern peoples celebrated the festival of the Twelve Nights. This festival, as already stated, commenced on the 25th of December. Though in the depth of midwinter, when the ice-king was in the full flush of victory, it was nevertheless the turning-point in the conflict of natural forces. The sun-god having reached the goal of the winter solstice, now wheeled his fiery steeds, and became the sure precursor of the coming victory of light and life over darkness and death.

But while a pagan festival might be transformed into a Christian holiday, there was no place in a system of theism, unless in its poesy, for the pantheon of pagan gods. These were therefore either relegated to oblivion, or, metamorphosed into demons, witches, and ghosts, are now supposed to have special power to work mischief, particularly during the Christmas.

If you're just starting out as an NLP practitioner, or have been working for a while but not getting quite the results you'd hoped for, this is an excellent addition to your book collection. Packed with plenty of practical advice from business practicalities to working with clients, it is well-written and informative. Unlike many "cheap" Kindle books, this one really does offer value for money and more. Best $2.99 I've invested in a long time.

This book should be given to every student of NLP. There's a need for clear direction of what to do after becoming a licensed NLP practitioner and Murielle provides that guidance. It's extremely well-written with plenty of examples and practical info. It's one of those books which you will keep going back to as a reference guide.

AMAZING BOOK!!!!!

In this book mary anne gets her first boyfriend. She was the first person in BSC to have serious boyfriend. I love this book because you wouldn't think mary anne would ever get a boyfriend. She is so shy and quiet. She likes logan because he speaks in a sweet southern accent and looks like her favorite teen idol. Near the end of the book mary Anne's friends throw her a birthday party without her knowing. She runs off when she realised that the party was for her. That day she asked her dad for a cat for a early b-day present. Her strict dad accually said yes! she invited logan to get the cat with them. Once she got the cat she broke out the nerve to talk to the rest of the BSC. once they got done talking they all decided to move their meeting to Mary Anne's house. She was so excited to show them her new cat. When they got there they had all of mary annes presents fom the party!

All in all I would really reccomend this book to anyone. I loved this book and I know you will too.

I loved this book. I had a great time reading this book because Mary Anne is usually very shy about boys. Mary Anne finally found a boy likes her. I really really really really really liked it. I think that you should read this book.

WITTY ENDEARING DELIGHTFUL DON"T MISS "ON RVING TIME' SERIES

I loved this travel series! Started out with Book 3 and got hooked. The aud'acity of their voyage so soon after buying a 40' fifth-wheel as well as the humorous slant to the writing kept me turning pages. I immediately read Book 1 and then Book 2. We are long-time RV'ers and plan to head to Mexico soon. Having experienced many of the highs and lows, I could empathize with the challenges as well as the sense of adventure that had John and Sharon taking off again three months after heading back home. Hint: After reading the books, we watched the 1954 Lucille Ball movie by the same name. Expect the outrageously humorous, playful, slightly exaggerated style of the narrative to have you laughing out loud. I fell in love with Rex and Pedro and Jorgi, too. I look forward to hearing about life in Matzalan! Great job, Sharon! Keep the stories coming.....

Some people say Anna Karenina is the single greatest novel ever written, which makes about as much sense to me as trying to determine the world's greatest color. But there is no doubt that Anna Karenina, generally considered Tolstoy's best book, is definitely one ripping great read. Anna, miserable in her loveless marriage, does the barely thinkable and succumbs to her desires for the dashing Vronsky. I don't want to give away the ending, but I will say that 19th-century Russia doesn't take well to that sort of thing.

And indeed this is where the greatness of the novel will be found to lie. Of all authors Tolstoy is the one whose art most contradicts his own views, and yet the one whose true personality is most revealed in his art. And what is Anna’s 'true personality'? It remains to the end not an enigma, but a factor and a phenomenon that is infinitely variable, like life itself.”

One third of the way through and it seems like a job

Oh my gosh, there is soooo much fluff in this story. No wonder it is over 800 pages. There are entire irrelevant conversations between characters and the waiter in a restaurant. Many characters have 2 or 3 names they go by. One third of the way through and it seems like a job.. Not really feeling the patience for this book right now. I am going to put it aside for a bit and try again later

Superb 19th-century literature.....

Didactic, comprehensive, tragic, and challenging, Tolstoy's Anna Karenina is immutably powerful 150 years after it's original telling. A searing juxtaposition of Constantine Levin, a confused, cautious, and questioning man and the impulsive, emotive Anna Karenina, Tolstoy's masterpiece gives reason to long reflect on the net results of adultery. Levin, a man of simple tastes and patient plodding, ultimately achieves love, family, and inner-peace while the cosmopolitan Anna, in her haste for self-gratification, throws it all away.
Amidst the often supercilious affectations of Russian nobility in Petersburg and Moscow, Tolstoy's refutation of the timeless notion of "greener pastures" plays out with striking effect. Of course, the impact of any 19th-century literature is directly proportional to one's predilections. However, Anna Karenina will engross, may even occasionally bore, but will never be less than a lesson well taught for those of the mind for reflection.
