Another happy ex-smoker checking in

I quit after 40 years of smoking at least one pack a day, and it was just as easy as Allen Carr said it would be. I think the key is to give in and accept what Carr is telling you.
I didn't think I was ready to quit. I thought I enjoyed smoking, and some days, a cigarette was my only incentive to get out of bed. I had bought the book on a whim, for some day far off in the future when I'd be "ready" to quit. I had bought a carton of cigarettes on Saturday, and then on Sunday I was bored and decided to read the book. Had my last cigarette before I was halfway through. Next morning at work, a friend asked me if I was ready to go outside for a smoke break and I said "Well, I don't smoke anymore, but I'll go outside with you."
No withdrawal pangs, just a feeling of relief that I didn't have to smoke any more, and that it wasn't going to be hard at all. All the smoking triggers that I worried about -- car trips, after meals, phone calls, stressful times at work or at home, leaving work and lighting up, having a beer at the bar -- none of those things triggered the urge. The urge is gone.
Wish I had found the book earlier.

After 8+ Months EDIT - after 8 years

"I'm 37 and have been smoking for about 20 years, 20 a day. For the past year I've slowly been realising that I should stop but felt trapped, that I couldn't give up, I'd tried before and failed, each time becoming more convinced that I could not escape."

That was what I thought 9 months ago - then I read Easyway and have never touched tobacco since. I still go out socialising and drinking with people who smoke, I still have a life and job that is sometimes stressful but I have never even been even slightly tempted to light up. Everything the book said turned out to be true; I am a happy ex-smoker.

The NHS should give this book out for free, anyone who smokes knows that the TV ads with those poor people dying or health warnings or pictures of damaged lungs do not convince people to give up, they certainly didn't make me stop, I just ignored them or changed channel.

I decided not to write a review right away but to give it some time and see if it continued to work, if anything it has got easier as the months passed by. At the time I bought the book I read lots of Amazon.co.uk reviews and still didn't believe it could work like this for me. It's beautifully simple, no gum, no patches, no scare tactics, its not about why you should stop, more like why should you continue, all you have to do is read to the end*

When I decided to buy it I thought "it's worth a try", now I don't miss cigarettes, quite the opposite, I wish I had read this 10 years ago. I was highly sceptical but decided it wasn't much money to risk, now I think it's probably the best buy I'll ever make in my lifetime.

*One word of caution - although the book is not especially long I stopped reading partway only to pick it up again a couple of weeks later. At some point it seems I realised that I would stop smoking when I finished the book and the only option my subconscious mind had was to stop reading (you are supposed to keep smoking until you finish the book), happily I picked it up again, finished the book and am still convinced I will never smoke again.

EDIT (2011) - 8 years on and I'm still a happy ex-smoker.

This book has been the most worthwhile purchase of my life.

Even if you don't really think you want to quit, it works

I thought I'd write a review of this book, but I think maybe it would be more revealing and sincere if I just paste a letter I wrote to a loved one about it. I had sent her a new copy of the book after it worked for me, and she wrote expressing that fear of quitting we all felt whenever we're contemplating quitting (or being somewhere where it was impossible to smoke for a few hours - oh the horror!)
Dear Jane,
Believe me when I tell you, the worst part about quitting is the FEAR of quitting. This book encourages you to smoke while you read it, and it won't "make" you do anything you don't want to! If you don't feel like quitting, you don't quit, no big deal! But those cigs are doing a real number on your brain, they are convincing you that you are afraid of life without them, life just won't be as enjoyable, you can't imagine never smoking again, etc. But don't be afraid to read the book! Like I said, if you want to still smoke, you do! There are no guilt trips at all.
You may think I was better suited for it because I had quit before, but let me tell you, I think I was WORSE off because all it accomplished, all those failed attempts did, was to CONVINCE me I could NEVER live my life without cigarettes! I was still dying for one over a YEAR later, just coasting along on willpower and totally failing and making myself go insane! I would pick fights with John so he would say, "Oh go have a cigarette for heavensakes!" I couldn't live the rest of my life like that, no way!!! Who could?! It's inhuman, WAY too much suffering! So, I'd start smoking again.
The thing about this book is it makes you a NONsmoker, like you were BEFORE you ever started! So you are not one of those pathetic EXsmokers who goes their whole life just dying for one more smoke, all the while acting so superior and righteous in front of current smokers.
When I got the book, I plowed through it in a day, expecting to find some "magic" part in it ... but there was none, and I kept smoking. A couple days later I thought, well maybe I read it too fast, maybe I'll read it again ... and had only gone through it again about halfway when I found myself walking home and tossing a cig after a couple of puffs and surprising myself by thinking so strongly, "I will never have another." I had a feeling that I can't describe, but it was among the finest feelings in my life and I'll never forget it. That feeling was freedom, delicious and palpable and absolutely confident. The hardest part was before I quit, of being afraid to quit. The quitting wasn't even hard, in fact, it gets more joyful every day that passes, unlike when I quit before. I was slightly physically uncomfortable for about 2 days (similar to that feeling of getting a cold) then it was gone. It's been over a month now and to be honest, I don't know exactly how long because I haven't counted and I don't really care, there's no struggle or internal strife or the need for a "reward" by celebrating anniversaries or whatever. It's just done. It's like I never smoked. And it had been 15 YEARS of smoking and being convinced that I would smoke till the day I died! Quite a turnaround!
But again, don't worry about just reading the book! If you don't feel like quitting, you don't! You are actually instructed to keep smoking while you read it! If you decide not to quit, I would NEVER think any less of you, I love you SO VERY MUCH! But do yourself a favor and just read it, with no pressure, no guilt, no expectations.

Colonel Hugh Kelso is privy to information regarding the Normandy landings, but he is injured and hiding on the German-occupied island of Jersey in May 1944. Kelso must be removed from Jersey before he is captured or, failing that, must be executed. Selected for the job is philosopher-turned-assassin Harry Martineau. To aid him in his impersonation of a Nazi officer, as well as guide him to Kelso, Harry secures the services of Sarah Drayton. Drayton's aunt is sheltering Kelso, and she is of an age to pose as Martineau's French mistress. Martineau is skillful but he is fortunate to obtain the help of an Italian naval officer and a Jewish actor-turned-German paratrooper who assist him in completing his task. Warm World War II Adventure

It's near the end of World War II, and Hugh Kelso is an American officer who knows important information about the pending invasion in France when his boat is sunk in the English Channel. His rescue raft washes up on the shore of the isle of Jersey, which is presently under German occupation. Hugh is lucky to be rescued by Helen de Ville, a Jersey resident who hides him in her home and gets a message to the Allies that she has him. A rescue team is sent, as it is imperative that Hugh Kelso be kept out of German hands because of the information he has about the invasion.

The British send in Harry Martineau, who can perfectly imitate a German officer and has nerves of steel, and young Sarah Drayton, a nurse who can pass for his French girlfriend who also happens to be Helen de Ville's niece. With their forged papers, Harry a/k/a Standartenfuhrer Max Vogel and Sarah fly to France to meet with the Resistance there, and then go on to Jersey to play their parts. At the same time, Field Marshall Erwin Rommel needs to be in two places at once, so he sends an imposter to Jersey to take his place. Rommel's double and Standartenfuhrer Vogel cross paths and make each other nervous, and Vogel has also raised some suspicions with the powers that be on Jersey.

The story moves from Rommel's imposter, to Harry and Sarah and their friends at de Ville Place, to the German contingent on the island, and cruises along at an easy pace while the danger slowly builds. Things happened that I knew were going to cause trouble, yet the story ambled along in an easy manner, which kept me turning the pages and eagerly anticipating being able to pick it back up every time I had to put it down. I've always enjoyed a good World War II story, and Jack Higgins seems to have a special flair for the era. I not only felt like I was right there on Jersey, but in the rooms with these characters, who were all warm, real people I would want to know. There's something incredibly romantic about the World War II era, with the black market, the bartering, the danger, and the basic lifestyle most people were reduced to as the world at large went off the rails. This book in particular showed a glimpse of life under occupation, and the wonderful human spirit that can prevail in such conditions. Though Jack Higgins has been writing books for a long time, I'm fairly new to them, and I consider myself lucky that there are so many more waiting for me.

It attempts to be a good filler for the big named fantasy writers but it doesn't make it very well. now that being said, its built on some good ideas and i hate to be "that guy" but frankly i would never pay money for this. it needs to be fleshed out farther and have some more editing done. its plot is so so and kind of dodgy in terms of consistency and the characters sometimes make actions completely against their current moral standpoint. it was a free book and that's the only reason that this isn't a 1

Hardly a breeze

As far as I have managed to read (I slogged dutifully through more than a third of the book), the story is divided among three main characters: Teenage princess Adrina, terminally bored in her father's palace, peopled by old boring courtiers and removed from what she considers real and exciting life; Little peasant boy named Vilmos, who, when provoked, discovers he can harness powerful and forbidden magic; And Seth, an elven monk (?) entrusted with Elven Queen-Mother safety and torn among his duty, her orders, and his unexplicable desire for a female elf of his own order. Apparently, if one continues reading, the paths of the protagonists will eventually meet. I did not manage to get that far, however. There are ominous portents that something terrible is brewing. The banished Dark Lord (sounds familiar?) threatens to return because magic is performed, ancient races about to clash, men drawn into the unavoidable conflict....All this may happen, but in truth, for a third of the book NOTHING happens!
The author uses all the well time-honored formulas, populating his fantasy with peoples, creatures, and events found in all the fantasy books that I have ever read, but up to the place I have read, nothing exciting or original. It's like chewing gum. There is a hint of freshness when you bite into it, but after a while you just masticate without really tasting anything. Quite childlish illustrations that often clash with text actually detract from the thin fare.

Stay away, these books are terrible!

I bought an earlier version the first several books of this series. Usually I'll at least finish a book once I've started but I couldn't finish these. The story line was terrible and incredibly difficult to follow.

This is a great reference book for those in the IT field. This really helps develop an understanding of how authentication technologies work under the hood in a clear and concise manner. There really aren't many other sources out that explain the amount of technologies covered in this book...

To those who say this is old, the computer security field is too fast paced to keep up with! Read this book so you develop an understanding of how the technologies operate under the hood and it will be easier to understand the new stuff.

I apply Enterprize Architecture techniques to my work and in short this considers the interlinking importance of business, information, applications, and technology in any analysis. Mechanics of User Identication and Authentication is firmly in the technology layer with some overlap in the application layer. It includes considerable depth in this area not only based on its 726 page count but also in the considerable detail provided and therefore provides a high degree of value for the dollar. If you are looking for one identity management technical reference book then you should consider this one. However if you are looking for an introductory book in identity management then this book is not for you. It offers separate chapters on UNIX and Windows and subsequent chapters drill into considerable detail into other authentication and related protocols. I do not have the knowledge to comment on the technical accuracy of this book but it will be the first one I reach for as my identity management project proceeds.
