Be aware there are two Volumes... this is volume 2

I was thrilled to be able to purchase this book since it contains an image and corresponding biography of the brother of my Great grandmother. The Bio lists information about his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather... a real plus for me.
The book itself, is very well done, although I did notice some of the signatures under the images are cut off, presumably due to the process of scanning or maybe the original was in that condition.
I would however like to make note to anyone considering purchasing this book, that the copy I got begins on page 518 of the original. The title pages says it is Volume 2. I'm not sure but I think that the other book listed with this one, that shows writing under the title on the cover, may be Volume 1.... but I don't know that for a fact since I purchased this one, and luckily it is the part that contains my relative.
Great book for genealogists who have relatives from Bay and Saginaw Counties in Michigan.

As a relatively new business coach I have been reading many books on coaching and related subjects over the last 2 year. However Anne Scoular's book is quite different. This timely book offers the reader a complete overview of all aspects of coaching, not only the latest theory but also many models, practical ideas and tools, against a background of a recovering global economy from one of the largest financial crisis and the challenges it is posing on organisations and individuals. It is written in an enjoyable style with intellect and wit.

Easy, Engaging and Useful

This book covers a lot of ground on the subject of coaching from someone who clearly knows the coaching business and what it takes to be a successful coach. It takes the reader through the full spectrum of what coaching is to the different styles of coaching, the different training programmes, the different accrediting organisations, the psychology behind it, the change it can bring, the different types of clients there are to the benefits it can bring both clients and organisations. It is also rich in tools, techniques and practical examples. It offers helpful advice on what you can expect from coaching right through to how to go about marketing yourself as a coach. As an HR Director, I particularly liked the 10 tough questions to ask a business coach. It is a good one stop shop for everything one needs to know about coaching whether you are employing a coach, you are starting out as a coach or simply developing a coaching career. Enjoy!

claudia and the bad joke

the story starts when the BSC get a new client Betsy Sobok a pratical joker claudia is the first baby-sitter for betsy she gives claudia a dribble glass with a fake fly inside a fake ice cube then she gives claudia some pepper gum finally claudia takes betsy outside thing there is no jokes out there but she was wrong betsy got claudia on a broken swing and they had a competition who could go the highest suddenly the swing broke claud went flying and landed on the ground with a thud she had broken her leg.

when she had had her leg in tracktion for a week (she also had a cast) she got to go home but still could'nt go to school for another 3 weeks she gets so bored some days that she doesnt know her grandma was not fed up with her

Such a sweet book! I love the babysitters club! I am reading the books in order and the are awesome. But the later books in the series "40 through 130" are mostly about boys they like and do not seem like things children need to know.But get this book it's awesome!

The Very Brief History Series is to history what Cliffs Notes is to literature. The author has a no-nonsense approach to deliver the important facts in history without getting bogged down with flowery prose. A short account of Napoleon's accomplishments, legend, and losses takes less than an hour to read.

What a rollercoaster of a book

I did not expect the ride that this history book gave me. I thought it would be rather dull. Mark Black is one of those rare historians who can make the personalities of the past live in front of you. The book was a very fast read and of course covers all the big events of Napoleon. With a couple of hours you will be able to talk like a Napoleonic history professor. Which is why I needed this book. An annoying cousin of mine is going to be shocked speechless when he starts talking about the new classes he is teaching. I can hardly wait for the reunion. Most of all the details about Napoleon are wonderful. I will not be a spoiler but Napoleon never mastered spelling. He was a combination of a genius and a monster. Can you guess what action he arranged to continue slavery in the US. When he was angry about his mediators being killed he asked his men to rape the women of the city for three days. He was raised as a strict Catholic but spoke of doubts about Jesus. He was proclaimed the anti-Christ by one major religious group. Was he killed by his wall paper? Why was no name put on his tomb? Do we have Napoleon the member of the French Academy of Science to thank for the metric system? These are the details Mark Black has written to give you a wonderful understanding of the real man Napoleon Bonaparte. And along the way you get the major events you need to know. A helpful book for any one in a European history class. I wish the author had been around when I was in college.

Easy To Read With Surprising Detail!

As with most of the "Very Brief History" series, this book is extremely well written and edited. It packs a surprising amount of information in just a few pages. The book starts with a brief overview of what is going to be covered, then goes into more detail with information about Napoleon's family, upbringing, military career, rise to power, enemies,downfall, and more, including opinions and speculation offered up by historians and enthusiasts!

Highly recommended!

l like the recipes.

Although another reader suggested that there were no baking times on the recipes, I was curious to see what type of goodies the author recommended. I am glad I did! The baking times ARE listed at the beginning of the recipe and at the end says “bake until done“. Maybe this was overlooked. Haven't tried any recipes yet, but am looking forward to baking delicious treats for the holidays!

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of reviewing Orchid Volume 1, which was a blast of originality. Tom Morello, from the mega popular rock group Rage Against the Machine, created a world of disdain, of misery, but more importantly: of a sliver of hope. The first collection introduced us to the divided world, as well as those still fighting for change no matter how bleak the outcome may seem. Now, with the second volume, we see the action ramp up and the stakes raised even more.

The second volume contains issues #5-8 of the series, which is where lots of the action builds. The small group of regime opposition, including Orchid, the young heroine of the story, Simon, the geeky but loyal rebel, and Opal, the mysterious woman with the legendary General China's mask, make their way to free the new rebel leader from certain death at the command of the mad dictator, Tomo Wolfe. The mask in Opal's position grants the wearer unbelievable powers, but only certain few can don it and not be murdered instantly. Morello continues craft an amazingly original story, with plot twists and revelations abound. By the end of the book, we have a good idea of what volume three will entail, or at least the direction it will go in. Hepburn's art continues to impress, as he designs this strange world of cannibal guards, monsters and more with such creativity. This collection should be proof enough to those that might say that Orchid Volume 1 was a one hit wonder, We get more story, more characterization, more epic battles, and more reason to jump on board Dark Horse's runaway hit.

fantastic, again

I was super exited when this came out because i love vol 1; i burned through vol 2 and can't wait for the next one. it's a really moving story with a neat art style.

Roger Peterson (1908–1996) catapulted to fame in 1934 with the publication (after four rejections) of A Field Guide to the Birds, which almost immediately sold out its first printing of 2,000 copies. Considered the first modern guide of its kind, Peterson's book featured descriptions of nearly 500 species of birds, including plumages and characteristic behavior, as well as his own meticulous illustrations of each bird—all of which were part of what became known as the Peterson Identification System. In this excellent biography, Carlson, an editor and regular contributor to the Georgia Review, skillfully shows how Peterson used his talents as an artist and educator to make the guide a bridge between academic ornithologists and the general public, an accomplishment that has made it, after five editions, the most important contribution to bird (and nature) study in the twentieth century, as well as an inspiration for conservation, environmentalism and ecological studies. Carlson also provides the best look so far at the influence on Peterson's work of his youth in Jamestown, N.Y., as well as some of the difficulties, after his death, in building the Roger Tory Peterson Institute in Jamestown, where his legacy continues unabated today. 15 b&w photos. A Life Devoted to Bird Study

Roger Tory Peterson devoted his life to the study of birds. In a 1996 speech delivered in Houston shortly before his death, he said, "Birds have occupied my daily thoughts, filled my dreams, dominated my reading."

He traced his love for birds to his boyhood and a day when he came upon a flicker with its head tucked under one wing. It was exhausted from migration, but Peterson thought the bird was dead and reached out to stroke its back. The bird exploded with life, and took off with a golden flash of wing, leaving the boy filled with wonder at its resurrection, its freedom and ability to fly.

Peterson began as an artist and by his early twenties had added his love of birds and nature to his art. A close associate suggested he write a field guide. Peterson took the idea a step further, incorporating his trademark identification arrows and descriptive text describing song, flight patterns, and nesting habits.

The first Peterson's guide almost didn't find a publisher. The country was in the grip of the Depression; publishers thought people had more to worry about than learning how to identify birds. Finally Houghton Mifflin took a chance with a small first printing, and in 1934 "A Field Guide to the Birds" was published. To everyone's amazement, the book sold out almost immediately. The Field Guides have continued to be a bestsellers ever since.

Peterson was one of the first to recognize the importance of environmental awareness, and was instrumental in getting the 1972 ban on DDT implemented. Additionally, he brought the world's attention to the decimation of the penguin from oil spills, and to the destruction of the bird-rich rain forests of Central America.

Painter, educator, photographer, writer, and environmentalist, Peterson lived to the age of 88. He chose as the epitaph on his tombstone: "Birds are the most vivid expression of life."

Douglas Carlson's skillful and absorbing biography brings this passionate, energetic man back to life, and celebrates his great gifts to the world of nature.

Writing style not doing justice to RTP

The subject of this biography, Roger Tory Peterson, is very interesting, but the biography is not particularly well written.
The narrative flow and the use of language is such that only the content retains the interest.
Oh, I would still have bought the book, but the above short-comings detract from the enjoyment I had anticipated.
Douglas Carlson might be a former professor of English, but his writing style is staid, sadly. He obviously hasn't caught on to the creative writing rule of 'show, - don't tell!'

But it is still a good gift idea to anyone interested in birds and birdwatching.

The Tragic Irony of Roger Tory Peterson

Carlson's subject, that of a famous ornithologist's life's work, is not for birders only. No, Carlson's biography of the field guide guru is an especially enlightening read for those of an awakening mind, for shining through Carlson's study of the professional Peterson are the universal themes, love, genius, art, joy, freedom and peace. Carlson's studied account of Peterson's life makes articulate for the philosophically-inclined what these abstractions mean, and for this naming treasure Roger Tory Peterson: A Biography is a treat to read.

Roger Tory Peterson loved birds because, he imagined as a boy full of romantic notions, birds were the ultimate expression of freedom (Carlson, 8). Peterson's idealization recalls the famous claim by the Christian guru of freedom, Jesus of Nazareth: "Behold the fowls of the air" who do not sow nor reap; neither do they store for tomorrow and yet they have enough food to eat, Matthew 6:26. Peterson, who as a child was brought up, baptized and confirmed Lutheran, his mother a Sunday school teacher, (Carlson, 4) was no doubt influenced by this of all lies. This of all lies: birds are not carefree. Birds are bound, rather, by their need to gather the resources to live, theirs being a subsistence existence. And yet for young Peterson birds represented "the physical freedom to go anywhere they wanted" (Carlson, 260).

Peterson eventually discovered that birds did not satisfy as a symbol of freedom because they are "captives of environmental factors and genetically encoded behaviors" (Carlson, 18), which is ironic because so was Peterson bound--bound by cultural expectations of man as provider. Like the birds he studied, thought about, wrote about, and painted, Peterson himself was confined first to earn a living for the clothing, feeding and nesting of his family, and finally to establish his legacy. Publishing revised editions of what became for him his "dreaded" Field Guide, Peterson was not free. Freedom to him was to luxuriate in his studio with paint brush and bird subject (Carlson, 233), but he had little time to let loose the floodgates of his vision with the demands of his life's work, the work that brought him fame and a modest fortune, pressing down upon him. He was, to put it bluntly, no more free than the fowls of the air. Carlson's biography of Roger Tory Peterson builds brilliantly the tragic irony of Peterson's life. And for this too, a cautionary tale equal to the opening scenes of The Bhagavad Gita in which the warrior, Arjuna, because of his attachment, cannot see reality, Roger Tory Peterson: A Biography is an eye-opening read.
