Ho hum

I was so extraordinarily disappointed in the author. I have read many a book by Janelle Denison and she has always been literate. I could not believe the number of typos, spelling errors, incorrect homonyms etc. Looks to me like an unedited first draft was shoved into print. I don't think the author ev en proof read her own story. In one paragraph his button fly jeans are being unbuttoned and 2 paragraphs later he is zipping up his jeans.

My father was a compulsive gambler and some parts of this story were hard for me to read. But they are also strong parts and I like how his friends rallied around him.

I am really dead bored with the cliche of the magic hoo-ha, as Sarah Wendell of Smart Bitches, Trashy books calls it. This is when the guy sticks in and discovers he is in a hoo-ha unlike any other he has ever been in. Through a condom, no less. Of course, this guy also has to be the kind of guy who makes it clear to women that he is only interested in sex. But once his pointy bit meets the magic hoo-ha all of a sudden he is ready for marriage.

The other thing that offends me about the magic hoo-ha is that it is not the woman's personality or intelligence that convinces this guy that this is THE woman. Nope. How sexist is that?

This book was part of a 6 book set called Sinfully Sweet which I purchased for 99 cents. I guess you get what you pay for.

Tamest of the Wilde books

Born to be Wilde is the final book in the Wilde siblings/cousin anthology. This book deals with Joel Wilde - the brother we've only seen casually mentioned in other Wilde books.

Joel, an ex-marine, along with some of his Marine buddies have started a security company, Elite Security Specialists. One marine buddy who didn't join in the firm is Zach Marshall. Zach is having problems dealing with life since leaving the Marines - gambling and alcohol have taken over his life. In fact, Zach has gotten in over his head with his gambling debts and now the bookie to who he owes a lot money wants it now and is willing to threaten Zach's sister Lora.

Zach asks Joel to watch over Lora and Joel agrees as Zach saved Joel's life in Baghdad. He and his team will watch Lora 24/7. To help with the effort, Joel decides that casually dating Lora will make it easier to watch her. He refuses to get involved with her as she's his responsibility. And even if that weren't the case, he doesn't "do" love. He keeps women from getting too close to him as having a committed relationship is something he doesn't want.

Lora has her own issues. She got burnt in a previous relationship, but unlike Joel is willing to give love another try. She knows that what she could have with Joel is something special. She understands why Joel is afraid of having a relationship but is willing to give him the space he needs.

A nice addition to this book is the romance between Sydney, Lora's close friend and boss, and Daniel, Sydney's daughter math teacher. Sydney wants nothing to do with having a relationship. She's been burned in the past and has no interest in having a "relationship" (she can't even bring herself to say the word). Daniel isn't interested in casual sex - he wants a relationship with Sydney. Reading about these two trying to get together was a lot of fun and for me - as enjoyable if not more so than the Lora/Joel story line.

Someone noted in the review of Too Wilde to Tame that the "heat" was considerably lower in that book than in the previous Wilde books. I found that Born to be Wilde had even less heat that that book. This is pretty tame stuff in comparison to the other Wilde books.

This is a good book, but not a great one. I enjoyed reading it and it was great fun to see the final Wilde sibling meet his mate. And the series will continue (in a way) with the new books dealing with Joel's friends/co-workers of Elite Security Specialists. But unlike some of the other Wilde books, this one won't find its way onto my keeper shelf.

Boring and .... still boring

Immediate confession: I only made it 25% of the way through. I have not read any of the author's other books, and I don't know how this actually compares to the rest of her writing.

Our hero is an ex-Marine, and his buddy calls in a favor because he went to a loan shark and USED HIS SISTER'S LIFE INSURANCE as collateral. (Why do my instincts say he'll get his own book, with a woman who can help him stay straight after he's gone to gambler's anonymous?) So, our hero and his other buddies started a private security firm and he's the perfect man for the job. Rather than admitting that her life is in danger, he "pretends" to pick her up in the bar she works at.

Anyway. Why would the promise of so much action get 2*? A lot of its downfall came from dialogue.
Him: "Since the bar isn't open during the day, and you have to work in the morning, I guess you have a second job?"
Her: "Yes, it's my day job, where I make most of my money."

Do people talk like that in Chicago? Because honestly, I think we could infer that and so could the characters.

There were similarly unnecessary explanations written into EVERYTHING. The author actually explains that, after making an offer about taking her for a ride (on his motorcycle), that he was thinking about a different kind of ride, with her legs wrapped around him. Yeah, we understood the innuendo, thanks. If A says something funny, you don't need to explain that ~B laughed because A had made a joke about a sentence in the previous paragraph, which I was afraid you might have already forgotten about.~

This avoided a 1* rating because the author DOES have a decent story, and it's not like the writing is bad. If anything, an editor who can convince her to cut the play-by-play explanations could pop this up to 4*.

I paid $2.99 for a set of 3 books, but I don't think I'll be trying the other two.

Thoughtful advocacy of applying lessons from aviation safety to health care

The aviation industry, in conjunction with aviation regulators, developed a comprehensive system of safety practices and procedures to deal with a broad range of recurring problems that were causing aviation disasters and serious accidents. This book discusses the history of those safety efforts, identifies the critical elements of aviation safety, and argues that health care professionals can learn important lessons that could be applied to significantly reduce medical errors and improve patient safety.

The authors provide an informative look at the history of the development and application of Crew Resource Management (CRM) and threat and error management (TEM) by the aviation industry. They provide a realistic picture of the strengths, weaknesses, and limitations of CRM and TEM, and do not lapse into a simplistic or superficial advocacy of CRM and TEM as panaceas or "quick fixes" for health care professionals trying to reduce medical errors and improve patient safety. Also, the authors are careful to note both similarities and differences between the aviation industry and health care in their discussion, and avoid relying on facile or superficial analogies or comparisons that would undermine their contentions, arguments, and recommendations.

Overall, this book provides an excellent, thoughtful discussion of how the hard-earned lessons of aviation safety can provide insights and ideas that could help reduce medical errors and improve patient safety. Unfortunately, the three case studies about health care institutions used to support the authors' contentions, arguments, and recommendations have an uneven persuasive quality. The first case study provides support for the authors' contentions about the applicability of CRM and TEM to health care. The second case study is the weakest of the three because it does not provide any clearly discernable support for the authors' contentions about the applicability of CRM and TEM to health care. The third case study also provides support for the authors' contentions about the applicability of CRM and TEM to health care, but it is not as persuasive as the first case study.

Despite the criticism made about the uneven quality of the three case studies, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject of reducing medical errors and improving patient safety. The interdisciplinary approach taken by the authors is very helpful in providing useful insights and a different perspective that could help reduce the risk of occupational and professional myopia and "blinders" similar to those that the aviation industry had to confront and overcome before CRM and TEM could be effectively adopted and applied.

LOVE THE INFORMATION

I have survived in flying a private plane for many decades... Found out (from this book) a lot about how I can improve my odds of lasting many more decades. I knew commercial pilots years ago who hated the changes that were happening in the airlines with CRM who were like me (old style seat-of-the-pants pilots) and only trusted themselves.They did not want to listen to input from others when decisions were to be made in the plane. They were THE CAPTAIN!

Those of us who survived being "Lone Rangers" of those years got ourselves in and out of trouble several times because we knew we had to do things on our own (macho). If we knew then what we know now, several pilots from years past would still be here instead of augered into terra firma.

This approach is needed in health care because I know nurses who've witnessed many critical errors in surgery, and in prescribing, that could have been avoided if they were allowed to suggest anything to the white coated autocrat. But, sadly, the heirarchy did not allow them to speak up for fear of losing their jobs.

Egos have taken many lives, and it is time for that to end. Gary Null researched the safety of medical care, and wrote "Death By Medicine". He reported that medical care kills almost a million people per year and is the leading cause of death in this country. Many physicians need to become accountable instead of relying on pharmaceutical reps, hospital management, etc. to tell them what to do (and protect them if they make a mistake). An attorney I know will not even do medical malpractice cases because he said "Good luck in getting an MD to testify against another MD." It is not a "transparent" group or organization.

The "standard of care" in medicine is not what should be done in so many cases! You and I have heard the stories of death and debilitation because of errors we knew were done... It is time for many doctors to refer out for other opinions with different providers, and get feedback from professionals outside their tight knit little cliques. They are dealing with people's lives, hopes, dreams, families, and friends, not just a "patient".

So many doctors really care about what happens to their patients, but are shackled by the system that feeds them. Time to get back to good doctoring instead of tight business procedures. It's time for them to care enough to stand their ground and become the great doctors they can be, instead of being pawns of drug companies, management, insurance companies, and other people/things that keep them from being exemplary in their work.

Save your money, Big Disappointment!!!

I work in the hospital setting and really tried to like this book. I saw that it was written by a pilot and some health-caregivers. It also had a foreword written by "Sully" the pilot who flew the plane involved in the "Miracle on the Hudson."
For the first few chapters I saw a glimmer of hope that this book would be a fair attempt to point out what is wrong in healthcare.
As I delved further into the book, I saw how the authors made more and more reference to how physicians' egos are at the heart of the problem in healthcare. Gordon cites weak anecdotal stories of poor performing doctors and how they somehow should be used to represent the whole field of medicine. In addition, Gordon refers to physicians as if they are all males which is untrue. Her bias really shows through and takes away from her credibility.
The authors are upset because nurses and doctors speak two different languages (this may be true because of the 2 different levels of education). And that doctors never look at the nurses charting (lie). And that the charting for nurses, colored light rose, are separate from charting for physicians, colored grey-blue (lie).
The authors also complain that nurses are not allowed to write as if they have made a diagnosis in the chart and that they have to write in more descriptive style. Instead of just flattening the hierarchy, it sounds as if the authors want to rid what makes a physician different from a nurse and make them all equals in the patient care. I'd like to see a pilot delegate his expertise in flying a plane to a flight hostess when the plane is crashing (sarcasm). There is obvious minimizing of what physicians do.
Throughout the book the author uses airline CRM for examples that can be used in medicine. This is where things gets tougher. Anyone who has worked in healthcare knows that the airline industry only scratches the surface of how complicated healthcare is. I've had pilots say that airline CRM to what we do is extremely challenging. To say otherwise is naive.
Finally, this book ignores how patients can add to their own safety. Unlike in a commercial flight where passengers are passive customers, patients are customers who have much to gain or lose. As a clinician, I've seen a great many patients not even know who their doctors are or know what type of surgery they are having.
I am rather disappointed in this book. It had the potential to really make a difference but failed. If you end up reading this book, I really suggest asking yourself what the true motive of this book is.

So hot it leaves you yearning for more

This is my first experience with Ms. Knight. I picked it because I wanted a quick read over Christmas. Sorcha, the heroine, is strong and independent, which is a refreshing divergence from some of the female characters in historical romance. Reed was the perfect alpha hero, strong, protective and commanding. The couple's strengths complimented each other and played a dual role of keeping them apart and creating an undeniable attraction.

Ms. Knight packed an amazing amount of sexual tension, sizzling sex, and blossoming love into a short span of time. While it is a short story, it allows the reader to connect with the characters and become a part of the story. The only downfall to the story was it ended much to quickly. I'm intrigued by Sorcha and Reed and would love to find out more.

I will definitely be reading more of Ms. Knight's work.

This book was interesting , complete with some humor, sizzling chemistry, sex and well-liked characters. Unfortunately, it was also too short (only 66 pages), leading to feelings of the story being rushed for the reader, along with a lack of character development. This gave the book a feeling of unfinished business and tons of questions. Nevertheless, the book was mostly enjoyable for its shortness. The best thing that happened in the story was that the heroine, Sorcha, manages to save Reed Campbell's life in the end, which definitely gives her some winning points as a likeable main character. Overall, Highland Brawn was a good book. I only wish that it was longer than just 66 pages. A lot more scenes could been added for $2.51. For such a brief story, it should've been $0.99. Still, the book was definitely 5 stars.

A very useful book, although some information is omitted

There are a lot of sources about how to market YOUR self-published books, but this has to be one of the most useful I've seen yet. There are some drawbacks, but they're not the author's fault. I do think that they probably should have been mentioned, though, so I would have to take off half a star for that. Here are the reasons why (a fairly long explanation, but I really think it's worth reading.)

There are Wordpress blogs for self-published books. There are Facebook pages. There are Twitter feeds. There are links that the author puts in every one of their emails. There are... well, there's really no need to on and on about it, because we've all seen the standard ways. But the reality is that every single one of them leads straight to the same thing-- a book. And I think that ironically, this is why none of these methods is successful in and of itself.

Think about it logically: when people see yet another attempt to publicize a self-published book, most are going to think somewhere in the back of their minds, "Oh,God, there's another one. I would have to invest both money and time to even find out if it's any good. No, no, no." And it makes sense. Most self-published books aren't very good. Figuring out if a book is worth your time is MORE of a time investment that most people are willing to do.

But what if you have a link to a video?

That requires a two-minute time commitment. Even if it's terrible, the potential buyer has spent only two minutes on it. Watching a video doesn't require the same kind of sustained attention as reading a book. So people weigh the opportunity cost-- no matter how unconsciously that happens-- and they are so much more likely to click on that link to a video. So more and more authors are creating and putting up book trailers themselves, BUT... it's still not common.

That's really why this book makes sense. It has excellent advice on structuring and writing your trailer, as well as on choosing images. There's a great selection of links to copyright-free material. There's also good, solid information about getting your promo work out there on Youtube. There isn't really information about how to get people to watch your video, but truthfully, I think that because of the issues explained in the paragraph above, you can make this happen on your own.

The drawbacks? This isn't the author's fault, but the truth is that you really do need to have experience with editing, graphic design, and motion graphics (at minimum!) to do a video that's good in all of its aspects. You really should understand color design, alignment, balance, and proximity, eyeline, timing, spacing, the 180 rule, the gatefold rule, the 8-frame rule, and many more. You honestly do need to have studied and practiced these fundamentals. Sorry-- but that's just the truth. You're trying to create another art form, one both related to and distinct from books. That can't be done well without study, experience, and training.

THAT having been said, the time to start that study is now! :) Analyze professional book trailers. Take notes on commercials. Try out different combinations of images, text, music, and voiceovers. I don't know how much can be done in Moviemaker (I use Adobe CS-- After Effects, Flash, Illustrator, Photoshop, et al), but I think that there are a lot more capabilities than most people realize.

And yes, there are some other tricks for doing some things that are both unique and appealing in self-published book trailers-- things I've NEVER seen yet-- but I can't tell you what they are. Sorry! Those are the ones I'm working on right now! :)

A good resource for entry-level marketing. Straight forward...the price is right...written in easy-to-understand language.

Since I am also a proponent of copyright education and a collector of high quality Public Domain media [100% free for commercial use], I appreciated Lycar's discussion about understanding Creative Common Licenses as well as her Appendices that provide numerous links to websites supplying free or low cost photography, backgrounds, music and video clips.
