Mass Media bias exposed!

In "Representing O.J.; editor Gregg Barak makes use of meta-analysis to present a broad spectrum of views and commentary pertaining to the controversial "not guilty" verdict in the O.J. Simpson trial. Supported by contributed accounts, the editor paints a very disturbing picture of the African-American people's plight under the country's justice system. Also of particular interest is the role that the mass communications media is described as playing in the orchestration of periodic themes of violence that tend to depict members of racial minorities as having a monopoly on crime. Frenzied coverage of O.J. Simpson himself, Mike Tyson, Clarence Thomas and the dismissed Afro-American male juror whose crime was to look at a non-black female juror is presented as indicative of suck bias, and that's not all.
According to Barak and Co; themes such as the foregoing also have the effect of perpetuating the hegemonic order. As one contributor puts it, it is by means of legal fictions that the ruling class often criminalizes, manipulates, and otherwise controls political opponents and "uppity niggers" sic. He adds that occasional disorder actually serves to provide the ruling class with an excuse to tighten its grip on society by enacting harsher penal laws for society's so-called protection.
With regard to the "not guilty" verdict, the prevailing view seems to be that, that was a mere fluke since the factors that combined to influence it are non-existent in the majority of cases where Blacks fall foul of the law. Not everybody can afford the high legal fees that went into the Simpson defence and therefore they end up having to plea-bargain. The system was never meat to work for the African-American and therefore it would be naïve for anyone of them to believe that now it does. The book is surely an eye opener to anyone interested in the legal system and its impact on certain sectors of American society.

The tale is a simple one: Usagi follows a tricky fox spirit into a demon-infested wood at the behest of a mother who has lost her child therein. Whereas Sakai’s narrative minimalism is deceptive over the course of the series—small events and intrigues form a much larger tapestry that produces an epic sweep—in this stand-alone tale, the simplicity makes for a story that is essentially one large fight scene. It’s a cool fight scene, to be sure, with the dogged samurai taking on a phantasmagoria of weird spirits and demons lifted from Japanese folklore and meeting up with an ancient demon hunter who holds the key to the story’s somewhat predictable twist. An Excellent Introduction to the World of Usagi Yojimbo

Yokai is the Japanese word for spirits/ghouls, and that nicely summarizes this beautiful 58 page hardbound graphic novel in which our main character, Miyamoto Usagi, a samurai warrior bunny from an anthropomorphic version of Japan's 17th century, finds himself battling an odd lot of ghosts and goblins seeking to enslave the world.

The artwork and water colors are brilliant, the action is abundant, and the tone absolutely delivers in the fine Usagi Yojimbo tradition. It is, at times, absurdly silly, cute, exciting, dramatic, heroic and even tragic. Sakai blends all of this together seamlessly into only 58 pages. It's a rich adventure that puts you through enough powerful emotions to more than warrant the $14.95 price tag, plus it's one heck of a handsome volume.

Extras include an in-depth interview with Stan Sakai about the making of Yokai, including samples of artwork in their early stages, a brief summary of Stan's career thus far, and some very nice Usagi artwork inside the covers, on the title page, and a small piece on the last page. I particularly enjoy that last depiction of Usagi having a conniption fit. Quite cute.

All in all, this is a handsome volume containing one heck of a quintessential Usagi story that any beginner to the series could easily appreciate. Plus it features my all time favorite supporting character in Usagi's Universe, Sasuke The Demon Queller, Sakai's answer to Doctor Strange, only more bad-ass. Still, the volume is family friendly and will easily cater to people of all age groups and interests. Whether or not you're a fan of comics, furry animals, or Feudal Japanese culture, Yokai can't help but impress.

Samurai Adventure; Full color painted fun!

Sakai has achieved near perfection with this fully painted tale of Usagi Yojimbo. This story revolves around many of the ancient japanese spirits, demons, and myths. The full color paintings are amazing and the story is a lot of fun. I had planned to take this one slow but found myself plowing through the whole book rather quickly. I then went back and just looked at the art in detail. I could not be happier with this hard cover tale of Feudal Japan, as told by Stan Sakai. I have always loved his characters, and this story was great! I would highly recommend this book to anybody that is interested in classic comics, samurai stories, japanese folk myths, or is just a fan of Usago Yojimbo. This is a must have to add to my ever growing library of amazing hard cover graphic novels. The price was right and I will read this one again and again.

Interesting and well-drawn story

Miyamoto Usagi is a traveling warrior (the "Yojimbo" part of the title). He's wandering through a dark forest when he comes upon some monsters and ghosts from Japanese folklore (the "Yokai" part of the title). After an initial run-in with a fox-fire, Usagi finds a beautiful, well-dressed woman who is crying. Her daughter has been kidnapped by one of the spirits and taken deeper into the woods. This particular night is a sort of Halloween, when all the spirits get together to cause trouble for the living. Usagi promises to find the girl and return her. He soon discovers that this night is extra-special--the Yokai want to use the girl to raise a terrible demon who will bring about the end of the world! His adventure leads him into many fights with the Yokai as he joins an old friend, Sasuke the Demon Queller (just the sort of person he needs on a night like this), to save the world.

This story is a twenty-fifth anniversary special edition of Usagi Yojimbo, so it is in full color and is a stand-alone story. I haven't read any other stories but I had an easy time following and enjoying this story. The monsters are interesting in their bizarre and quirky way (much like the monsters in Hellboy stories). The action and humor are well-executed. The art is watercolor, which is unusual for graphic novels but suits the story, giving it enough other-worldliness to make it fascinating and unique. I am definitely curious to read more adventures of this character.

Indeed, the island of Great Britain takes its name from tattooing; Britons translates as "people of the designs", and Picts, the peoples who originally inhabited the northern part of Britain, literally means "the painted people". Despite some taboos surrounding tattooing, the practice continues to be popular in many parts of the world.

Tattooing has been a Eurasian practice at least since Neolithic times. Ötzi the Iceman, dating from the fourth to fifth millennium BC, was found in the Ötz valley in the Alps and had some 57 carbon tattoos consisting of simple dots and lines on his lower spine, behind his left knee, and on his right ankle. These tattoos were thought to be a form of healing because of their placement, which resembles acupuncture. Other mummies bearing tattoos and dating from the end of the second millennium BC have been discovered, such as the Mummy of Amunet from ancient Egypt and the mummies at Pazyryk on the Ukok Plateau.

Pre-Christian Germanic, Celtic and other central and northern European tribes were often heavily tattooed, according to surviving accounts. The Picts were famously tattooed (or scarified) with elaborate, war-inspired black or dark blue woad (or possibly copper for the blue tone) designs. Julius Caesar described these tattoos in Book V of his Gallic Wars (54 BC).

Various other cultures have had their own tattoo traditions, ranging from rubbing cuts and other wounds with ashes, to hand-pricking the skin to insert dyes.

Modern tattooing in the Western world has its origins in sixteenth through eighteenth century maritime expeditions, which promoted contact between explorers and the amerindian tribes and Polynesians they encountered. The Polynesian practice, especially, became popular among European sailors, who took the Samoan word tatau to describe the actual tattoo. As sailors traveled abroad and returned home with tattoos inscribed on their bodies, tattoos began to appear in mainstream European, and eventually North American, figurations, as well.

As many tattoos were stimulated by Polynesian and Japanese examples, amateur tattoo artists were in great demand in port cities all over the world, especially by European and American sailors. The first documented professional tattoo artist in the USA was Martin Hildebrandt, a German immigrant who arrived in Boston, Massachusetts in 1846. Between 1861 and 1865, he tattooed soldiers on both sides in the American Civil War. The first documented professional tattooist in Britain was established in Liverpool in the 1870s. Tattooing was an expensive and painful process and by the 1870s had become a mark of wealth for the crowned heads of Europe.
