In the Sword of the Gods saga, Mikhail is not the perfect creature of the bible, but a three-dimensional character with strengths and weaknesses, including his own inner demons.  Although an Angelic, he is not an invisible spirit, but a soldier.  Like soldier's everywhere, he has been handed somebody else's mess to clean up and he does so without complaint because that is what soldiers do. 

In researching the mythology of angels, the Fallen, and the various entities who have been lumped under the label 'devil' over the millennia across many religions, what emerged was a group of multi-faceted characters and warring city-states far different than the dogma preached in most religions today.  This story is neither a religious nor a historical text.  In fact, much of what is written may seem blasphemous to those who adhere to one particular religious text over another.  But once you read it, it is my hope you walk away awestruck not of the mythological Mikhail, but the very real soldier underlying the mythos whose heroism was so great we still remember his name today.

Different and well written

For those who have read some of my other reviews you know I consume written material at a prodigious rate. I enjoy SciFi and Fantasy as well as other fiction. Like many readers this first book in the series was free so I thought I would give it a try. I'm glad I did.

Story Line: A different take on the angel concept. Interesting twist and is plausible enough to be acceptable

Style: Well written. Smooth flow, appropriate choice of words and phrases. Didn't get too carried away with unusual titles, words or concepts that might require the reader to think too much.

Overall I enjoyed it enough to look forward to Book #2 and paying for it.

This book is a new look at mmm well im not really sure. its not really a new look upon creation because it is fiction, yet it will get you to go HMM. Its a new twist on love life and fighting for how one believes. certainly a different type of read for me but a good one. You must keep up with this book or you will get quite confused on who's who. given for review would recommend for readers 16 or older only die to higher reading level.

I picked this book up from the author at a science fiction convention in January and while I read it quickly, had neglected to write a review sooner. The way it combines mythology, technology, and explores early history is quite unique, and I enjoyed it greatly. Only one scene felt somewhat out of place compared to the rest of the book, but I'm still quite glad I picked it up.

It was grouped with real life experiences. It was too unreal to even be an interesting story. If it said it was fiction and was Biblical in it's theology it would have been enjoyable. Reading other reviews led me to think they did not realize it was fiction. I didn't either until I got response from the author. I' d rather read a true story or better fiction.

A terrible book

What a terrible book. I love reading accounts of heaven, but within a few pages I surmised that this was pure fiction, not a factual account. The first clue was the undue praise for the young artist and the fact that he was one of ten out of 10,000 applicants chosen for a special camp for young Christian artists. Also unbelievable was that he was to be THE "best artist in the history of the world," even greater than Raphael or Michelangelo. Once little cherubs appeared to the young artists (who for some odd reason had to climb a mountain to begin painting), I knew this story was a joke, but spaceships to heaven? Then the book became a farce. Other ridiculous moments: the "hero" is kidnapped by Satan, and when the prophetic art professor comes to comfort the boy's parents, they first discuss what he will take in his coffee! The cherubs also reappear to the parents, and the father comments that his looks like a little girl, then mentions he always wanted a little girl; at this point the wife tells him she's pregnant and the baby is most likely a girl. Even though their son has been kidnapped, the two then start kissing over this "happy news." The author even states that they forget all about their kidnapped son! This writing is amateurish and unreadable. This book should be clearly labled a work of [bad] fiction, not listed with factual or faith accounts from real believers.

From the Author
Every book should stand on its own, requiring no explanation to understand it. However, because Song of the Mountain departs from my usual fare, I'd like to give it a little background. In all the drafts and revisions this story has undergone, I've been asked most often where it takes place. Song is not meant to have a definite historical setting as my other works do. I wanted to create my own mythology for this story, so I needed a setting that offered the freedom to do so. Yet I wanted a real geological area, not a fantastic world. So I settled on the Orient, as Tolkien settled on Europe, and pulled it back beyond the farthest stretch of memory. I did include some elements that give it a hint of Chinese flavor, but only to build a culture from which China might have logically evolved. By so doing, I hope to set the story free, not bind it to historical expectations. By so explaining, I hope to free my readers to enjoy it.

Michelle Isenhoff writes books for teens and tweens. When she isn't creating imaginary adventures, she's probably off on a real one. She loves roller coasters and swimming in big waves. She's an avid runner. She likes big dogs, high school football games, old graveyards, and wearing flip-flops all winter. Once an elementary teacher, Michelle now homeschools two of her three kids.

AN ENCHANTING STORY, BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN

Michelle Isenhoff has a new fan in me! SONG OF THE MOUNTAIN is a beautiful story, lushly told in rich, descriptive language that is almost poetic. I am a huge fan of Ernest Hemingway, so forgive me for the comparisons. Robert Penn Warren wrote that Hemingway, citing Hemingway's THE SUN ALSO RISES (my favorite novel of all time), was more of a poet that an novelist. The same could be said for the author of SONG OF THE MOUNTAIN, but she certainly is a good storyteller! This book is so well-written, sentence for sentence.

This is an enchanting story with an ancient oriental background and the myths it makes use of are based on or derived from stories from the Bible and perhaps other religions - stories regarding the Creator, the Fall of Man, the Tree Of Good And Evil, and a saving tree (such as the Cross of Christ). These elements went into this elaborately and ingeniously dreamed up story.

This story features a young boy and the old guru who raised him. Their relationship reminds me of the relationship between the old fisherman, Santiago, and the young boy who fishes with him and keeps him company and looks after him, Manolin, in Hemingway's THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA. This book is also, thanks to Michelle Isenhoff, tempting me to read KIM, by Rudyard Kipling. KIM also features a young boy who lives with an old Tibetan lama. Yes, that Kipling book is on my table. That is one thing about really good books - they tend to make you want to read other really good books. So, I guess I am going to have to peruse the Isenhoff bookshelf for other goodies. I have a feeling I won't be disappointed.

I loved SONG OF THE MOUNTAIN, and I highly recommend it for Middlegraders and even older folks.

Masterfully written with vivid imagery

Rather than recite what this book is about I will tell you WHY its amazing. First of all, this author paints the scene with incredible DEEP detail WITHOUT weighing down the sentences. I don't know how she does it, but the paragraphs are rich with vivid descriptions without that tongue-tangling mess of words I find in so many other detailed books. If you click on the book above you can read the intro to see what I mean.

Also, the dialogue is...perfect. It's real, its deep (not surface or shallow) and it carries you deeper into the world that has been created for you. After reading The Life of Pi I was wanting another beautiful read. I read the description of this book and thought it would be a similar read but they are wholly different. This story-line is UNIQUE (another fresh and wonderfully designed idea) and I can't think of what to compare it to. I love that, also. Again, it's unique.

The old tales that the character has rejected from his Grandfather now act as a sort of guide...and they are so masterfully written. You will follow the character as he strives to find his past and finds himself in the process. Again, I simply can't think of anything to compare this to for you readers, but it was good enough that I'm leaving this review to simply say thank you to the author --thank you for creating such a beautiful story. Masterfully written with vivid imagery. LOVE this story.

A magical journey

This is written so well, so beautiful and detailed. I fell in love with young Song from the free preview. That's a first for me, haha. I wanted relaxing read for work, during breaks and such. Something that would be easy to put away after 15 minutes so what do I do? I get myself an Indie book thinking that it'd just be something to keep me from being bored. Ya...that didn't work out. I ended up pocketing my kindle and going to the bathroom a lot to finish the first chapter. After that I read it when I got home, it was THAT good. I was very surprised because it takes a master like Terry Goodkind to hold my interest (I'm a tad hyper).

If I was hiding in public bathroom at work (gross) to read this, it was good. I found myself trying to recite the first legend or poem in the shower. Its quite beautiful.

A book like this should have WAY more than 2 reviews so I don't understand if this is a new release or what, but how does such a story go unnoticed?

NOTICE IT! I don't know what to say other than to give my regards to the author. Nicely done!!! I mean...very nice. I feel like I found an Amazon Indie treasure. I'll be sharing this with all my co-workers.

P.S. I had to edit this review because for some reason when I was trying to describe the book I kept reciting it instead. I can't seem to leave a review that justifies the work. The elegance in this authors writing makes an unbelievably entertaining read and the story just draws you in with the imagery and depth of characters. I shared the story with a friend who thought it was one of those best sellers off the amazon list. I didn't tell him that it was someone like you an me, a regular woman who is an artist of words; someone who painted us an epic tale that is akin to a new fable. Just such an incredible story I wish I could rate it more than 5 stars.

Conan Doyle was a fervent advocate of justice and personally investigated two closed cases, which led to two men being exonerated of the crimes of which they were accused. The first case, in 1906, involved a shy half-British, half-Indian lawyer named George Edalji who had allegedly penned threatening letters and mutilated animals. Police were set on Edalji's conviction, even though the mutilations continued after their suspect was jailed.

The second case, that of Oscar Slater, a German Jew and gambling-den operator convicted of bludgeoning an 82-year-old woman in Glasgow in 1908, excited Conan Doyle's curiosity because of inconsistencies in the prosecution case and a general sense that Slater was not guilty. He ended up paying most of the costs for Slater's successful appeal in 1928.


Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish physician and writer, most noted for his stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes, generally considered a milestone in the field of crime fiction, and for the adventures of Professor Challenger. He was a prolific writer whose other works include science fiction stories, plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction and historical novels.

"It was the band! The speckled band!"

These were the strange last words spoken by Helen Stoner's twin sister Julia as she lay, collapsed and dying, just two weeks before her wedding. Helen has approached Sherlock Holmes because her stepfather, Grimesby Roylott, owner of a decrepit old manse, has moved her into her sister's room just a month before her own wedding, saying her own room needs "repairs." Now some of the strange, night-time events which mystified her sister just before her death are occurring again. Strange, low whistles occurring around 3:00 a.m., Roylott's baboon and cheetah prowling freely in the dark, a band of gypsies camping on the property, and mysterious clangings have left Helen terrified.

The appearance of Roylott at Holmes's Baker Street residence, where he threatens Holmes physically and bends a fire poker in half to show his strength, make Holmes even more determined to help Helen to protect herself from this maniac. After Watson and Holmes gain admittance to Helen's quarters one night, they make additional observations--a bell pull which is not attached to any wiring, a new ventilator, a sound like a steam valve, and a bed that is anchored to the floor. How could all these weird observations be related "the speckled band"?

As always, the melodrama of events is set into sharp relief by Holmes's rational deductions. Doyle's well known ability to build suspense by capitalizing on the fears of his characters (and his readers), his use of vivid dialogue, his imaginative descriptions, and the quick pace of the action make this story compelling reading. The real mystery is not who killed Julia Stoner (and threatens Helen), but how the murder took place, and in this respect "Speckled Band" is one of Doyle's most elaborately constructed and most fascinating stories. Reputed to have been Doyle's own favorite story, it is the only mystery which Doyle himself adapted successfully for the stage. Mary Whipple
