Strictly for motor racing fans, especially those who bought his best-selling memoirs Life at the Limit four years ago, because the Grand Prix neurosurgeon plunges straight into recollections of major crashes, then memories of the great drivers he has known, and finally a race-by-race account of the Millennium season. Watkins has such broad access to the motor racing fraternity that every section is an insider account, especially when he goes to the aid of Michael Schumacher in the famous 1999 Silverstone crash and recommends a heart bypass operation for Bernie Ecclestone in the same year. Most of the anecdotes are tinged with medical matters, making them all the more unusual and reducing some of the Grand Prix heroes to very basic levels. Covering safety issues as well, the motor racing doctor takes fans on the inside track into aspects and hazards they would never normally know about.
About the Author
Sid Watkins has been involved in Formula One since 1978 and is one of the best-loved figures in the sport. He is also a leading neuro-surgeon.

Sadly disappointing

Sadly, I have to give it one star. The book is more of a travelogue about hotels and restaurants at each racing venue than about Sid Watkins medical and safety contributions to Formula One. Included is a complete synopsis of the 2000 Formula One season which is more about Sid's view on who he wants to be the champion than anything that happens of a medical nature. He also includes a chapter on the driver's that he knows from the 2000 season and the past. The final part of the book is simply filled with statistics and race data that is pretty much all taken from the FIA records. This was not a sequel to "Life at the Limit." It was very disjointed and rambling which I find sad since I am a great fan of Sid Watkins and all he has done for the sport.

Great read, but a little too short. Sid was a truly great man, and both of his books are worth reading.

A must read for F1 followers

a unique insight into the world of trauma medicine from the viewpoint of the man at the sharp end of the battle to reduce the inherent risks of motorsport. Professor Watkins (now sadly deceased) describes one of his years of leading the Medical Intervention teams of the Formula One championship with humor and a wonderful sense of character with many informative anecdotes and personal stories. My only criticism is the book is not long enough.
