Another wonderful Snelling book.

Snelling has a way of making the characters in her books seem like they are family or close personal friends. The way in which she develops the characters you find yourself totally engrossed in their lives and you care about what is happening to them. This character development is very true to her style in The Gift. You can see the image of Mac, the work hardened plumber/cowboy who has had pain and sorrow in his life, working with this rather fragile little boy who has already had a lifetime of pain and sorrow. Snelling is very good at slowly bringing out feelings and fears that live in the hearts and minds of her characters. Jonah's Mom has seen her son emotionally hurt so bad that he will not speak. After one look at the big horse her fears take her to new heights as she does not want her son physically damaged. Mac in his gruff yet very gentle way is able to reach out to both of them. He is able to do this largely through the very intuitive nature of the horse who, like many animals, can read this child's fears and genteelly lets Jonah overcome all his pain and sorrow. I would recommend any and all of Lauraine Snelling's books.

I found this to be a very sweet story, I was the single mom of a little boy and I really related to the mother's over-protectiveness of her son and their closeness. I also related to the few times I visited a ranch with my son when he was young. I very much enjoyed that part of the story with the little boy and the horse. However, I didn't feel any chemistry between the mother and Mac, the man who owned the ranch. For one thing there was very little description of their physical appearances, especially hers, and I just couldn't picture them in my mind, they were obscure, faceless entities with feelings and thoughts that any made up character could have. And in their interaction, there was nothing inspiring or special that made me desire to see them get together. If anything, the romance was an annoying part of the story that was predictable and uninteresting.

A wonderful story for children or adults.

As always I enjoy Lauraine Snellings books but this was special as I live in Tehachapi, CA where this story took place. A young boy with a problem and a horse that heals. It was so well told and a joy to read.
