By the author of Abram's STREISAND: IN THE CAMERA EYE. “As close to a definitive biography of Streisand as possible," wrote Newsday about this bestselling biography, "the strength of Spada’s book lies in his meticulous research.” “Lively, well-written, and assiduously researched," wrote Liz Smith. “Fascinating," wrote the New York Times Book Review. "The story of the public’s discovery of a genius and the genius’s discovery of herself.” “An even-handed and highly detailed look at the life of Barbra Streisand," wrote Publisher's Weekly, "offering lucid and insightful analyses of her artistic output on stage, in song, and on film. The sheer comprehensiveness of this bio will make it a satisfying read for Streisand devotees.”
This compulsively readable, monumental work is based on more than 200 interviews with Barbra's family, friends and colleagues. James Spada has followed Barbra's life and career for forty-five years and paints an intimate, frequently surprising portrait of a woman who continues to capture the public's imagination as few others ever have. Every aspect of Barbra’s life and work is covered in detail, from her father’s upbringing in the teeming ethnic ghettos of New York City through the filming of Barbra's latest movie, “The Guilt Trip.” Her closest childhood friends talk about the gawky misfit who sought surrogate parents; her Broadway coworkers reveal the rancorous breakup between Barbra and her “Funny Girl” costar; the costume designer of “The Way We Were” describes Redford's anxiety about doing a love scene with her; we learn intimate details about many of Barbra's lovers (Tommy Smothers, Omar Sharif, Ryan O'Neal, Warren Beatty, Elvis Presley, Prime Minister Trudeau, Don Johnson, James Brolin) and her often tempestuous, sometimes violent relationship with Jon Peters. Also included are the extraordinary backstage details of her most famous films—“Funny Girl”, “Hello, Dolly!”, What's Up, Doc?”, “The Way We Were”, A Star Is Born”, “The Prince of Tides” and “Meet the Fockers”—her albums, concerts, television appearances and political activism. This New York Times bestseller has been expanded and updated and is packed with photos. A must for all Streisand devotees.

From Publishers Weekly
Seasoned celebrity biographer Spada (Grace: The Secret Life of a Princess) here provides an evenhanded and highly detailed look at the life of Barbra Streisand. Beginning with his subject's childhood as a skinny Brooklynite from a broken home, Spada charts Streisand's meteoric rise to celebrity as a Broadway star by the age of 20, her tremendous popularity as a singer, her various love affairs with the likes of Elliot Gould and Warren Beatty and her ongoing battles?as actress, producer and director?with the Hollywood establishment. Streisand, who emerges as a complicated, highly talented figure, at once brash and insecure, overweening and generous, is a fascinating subject, although Spada's careful objectivity does not allow for the really intimate portrait the diva's fans might desire. But while Spada sometimes soft-pedals the more sensational details of Streisand's life?particularly the rockier points in her personal relationships?he compensates by offering lucid and insightful analyses of her artistic output on stage, in song and on film. And the sheer comprehensiveness of this bio will make it a satisfying read for Streisand devotees. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
This is Spada's third biography of Streisand (the others were Streisand: The Woman and The Legend, LJ 10/1/81; and Barbra: The First Decade, LJ 10/1/74), and it enlarges and updates the first book, which is not an easy task given Streisand's penchant for privacy. Spada interviewed countless friends and colleagues, from those who knew her in summer stock in the 1950s to her first love, to current friends. He has meticulously researched an impressive array of print sources, and what emerges is a surprisingly intimate portrait of a kooky nonconformist who became an internationally known singer, actress, director, and activist who recently spoke at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Spada chronicles this transformation in 560 pages of juicy Streisand detail. Annotated filmography and discography also included. Sure to be a bestseller. From Booklist
Spada has proven himself an adept and engaging biographer of stellar women in his books about Grace Kelly, Bette Davis, and now the ever controversial and compelling Streisand. Diva, stage and film actress, movie director, and liberal activist, Streisand has moved audiences to tears and laughter with her inimitable voice, bewitching presence, and gutsy humor. Her allure is based as much on her persistent insecurity as it is on her talent, a fact Spada illuminates in his account of her very tough Brooklyn childhood. Streisand suffered poverty and abuse but never wavered in her determination to be on stage in spite of being told, repeatedly, that she was impossibly ugly. Voraciously intelligent, creative, and kooky as they come, Streisand accentuated her physical uniqueness by dressing exotically, exaggerating her outsiderness, and singing with transcendent passion. Spada's description of her abrupt rise to fame--she was on the cover of Time at age 21 for her performance in Funny Girl is positively exhilarating, while his rundown of the production of every one of her shows, recordings, and films reveals the complexity of her artistic personality. And, of course, there's romance as Spada discusses Streisand's relationships with Elliott Gould, Omar Sharif, Ryan O'Neal, Jon Peters, and Don Johnson. It's a pleasure to have a fair and celebratory portrait of the multitalented Streisand, one of the world's most "gloriously successful misfits." Donna Seaman

This is THE book on Babs!!
By Stan Morris
Im a big Streisand fan and I've probably read every book about her. This one is definitely the BEST. While Bill Mann's recent book only goes up to 1964, this one covers Barbra's whole life up to 2012. This is Spada's third book on Barbra, so he is obviously a fan but in this one he is a bit less starry-eyed about her. Still,he treats her as the Great Star that she is, and gives her due as one of the most talented performers of all time. The book is intelligently written, very readable, and is so obviously well researched that one can feel confident in Spada's information and opinions Spada interviewed more friends, family and co-workers than any other Streisand biographer has ever done, and it shows. If you find Barbra intriguing, you really should read this book. If you read it when it first came out in 1995, read this one for the many many updates. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

The definitive book about Barbra
By Ned
This is defintely THE definitive book on Barbra Streisand. James Spada is the kind of writer who can bring you into the world of celebrities like no other and in "Streisand - Her Life, 2012, he does just that. I had read the original hard cover a few years ago and this new e-book edition contains a lot of great updates and extras. A must read for anyone who's into Barbra or who just wants to learn about one of the greatest talents of our time.

It's good
By saliero
I found the strongest part of the book was the early years - growing up in Brooklyn, and the determination to build an acting career. I was surprised that it was almost a revelation to Barbra that she might make a career out of singing, undertaken in order to keep the wolves from the door. I'm not an obsessive fan by any means but I found this book about a woman who is such an icon a good and meaty read. I kind of admnire her "obsessive" single-mindednessto achieve what she wants in her art. Not a hagiography, but a respectful look at an interesting and complex woman.
