Potential to be great but falls flat

First let me say I LOVE the idea of this book. I love the concept. The author definitely has a way with words and her descriptiveness is really well done. For that I would give this book 2.5 stars. But that's about it. I do NOT understand the 5 star reviews. Come on people. 5 stars?! The story starts out promising with a mysterious dragon prince and a brave young woman volunteering to be his bride so that her good friend can marry the man she loves. But once at the castle the author inexplicably stops the story development. It then reads more like a diary of the main characters daily activities. I mean really. Right down to the most boring and mundane minutiae. Her meals. Her gowns. Her dreams. Her every thought about the simplest things. It is almost as if the author just got lazy and didn't want to take the time to develop an actual story. Page after page of this nonsense. There was NO need for this. And meanwhile you hardly see or hear from the dragon prince. He is just scenery. No depth. No breadth to his character. He is painfully one dimensional. As story like this would have been better told from third person so he could be developed more. So I yawned and limped through the bulk of the book. A lot of the conversation was corny as well. And the ending was rushed like the ending of a Scooby Doo episode. Here again the author could have done so much more. But it was just as flat and boring as the middle of the book. It was one long recitation by the dragon about why he is cursed and why he allowed woman after woman to come to their deaths. I'm sorry but it was silly and half thought out. This book could have been so much more. I'm glad I got it free. I have no idea why anyone would rate it a 5 star. Have we been dummed down this badly by all these new self publishers? I don't know. To the author I say nice try but this story needs more meat. More sustenance. More action. Less first person musings about the weather and her gowns.

Interesting take on the fairy tale

Let me start my review by saying that I am obsessed (probably to an unhealthy degree), with fairy tales. That being said, I am always on the lookout for fresh takes on a classic tale.
This book was a good read. I really enjoyed the concept of the "beast" being a dragon. And I also liked the fact that he wasn't just some awful tyrant throughout most of the story. Of course, that does take away a bit of that whole "appearance reflects what's on the inside" idea, but, like I said, I enjoyed it nonetheless.
The writing was good--polished enough. There were no glaring, repetitive grammatical errors. (I just hate those...SO much.)
The book isn't exactly fast-paced, so if you are looking for a high amount of action or a high amount of whirlwind romance emotions, then maybe this book isn't right for you. It moves at a slow pace, carefully building the delicate relationship between the two main characters.
And that's fine. The pace is believable, and it made for a relaxing, poetic read...until closer to the end, and that is why I cannot give this book 4 or 5 stars. It WAS a good read, and I would encourage you to read it if you like fairy tales.
However, the ending...the pacing just fell apart there. No spoilers here, but, as mentioned before, throughout the book, the pace is slow, even, flowing. And then, suddenly, at the end, well...it's just over. There was a slow buildup to this ending that could have been beautiful and moving, and yet, I was left with the feeling that it was incomplete. The pace abruptly quickened, and it almost seemed as if the author simply decided it was time to end the book. If the book is going to be slow about everything throughout it...developing the relationships, revealing bits and pieces about the curse, then I feel that the ending shouldn't be so abrupt. The readers have been waiting for the BIG moments to happen, and then, it's time for them to happen, the reader takes a breath, blinks, and...it's over.The end.
For that reason, I'm giving this book 3.5 stars (The review will be 3 stars, officially, but just know that it's 3.5). It was good. I liked it. I wouldn't even be opposed to reading it again. But the ending left me disappointed.

Beauty and the Dragon

I sat down to read the first chapter or two of Dragon Rose, by Christine Pope, and ended up being unable to put it down until I had reached the end. I'm one of those people who can't get enough Beauty and the Beast retellings, and Pope's draconic twist was a unique take on the tale. Despite being very familiar with the Beauty and the Beast structure, there were many times when I was left in doubt as to what would come next.
The story's heroine is Rhianne, who has the practicality and kindness expected of an eldest daughter, but she has a dreamy side, as evidenced by her artistic nature. These traits come together to bring her to Black's Keep, as the latest Bride to the cursed dragon lord who lives there. Though initially sure that she's destined to be eaten, her new husband, Theran Blackmoor, proves to be similarly kind, witty, and thoughtful.
But in this tale, a nice husband and true love aren't enough to break a centuries old curse, and Rhianne may be running out of time to find the real key to their freedom.
I cannot explain to you exactly how much I loved this story. The characters were sympathetic and interesting, the descriptions were lush, without being overdone and the world and culture were compelling enough that I'm looking forward to reading the other books in the Tales of Latter Kingdoms series (though it should be noted that these are standalone works).
Fans of fairy tale fantasy, such as Robin McKinley's novels, are going to love this one.
