Rock solid ideas and precepts which make engineers (actually) think about their field

This book is not the same flavour as the usual regurgitated texts on design engineering or engineering design (whichever term you prefer) which concern themselves with either machine design or product development. This book focuses on technical systems in general and therefore makes it more valuable to ALL engineers, the great majority of whom don't actually design consumer-driven products.
As with Eder's previous collaborations, a lot of the material borrows from the late Vladimir Hubka, which is great. Delightfully though, there are more of the authors' own thoughts which come through, building on Hubka's timeless precepts, whilst adding a more contemporary slant in many places.
A word of caution though: this book is very theoretical and offers abstract (though insightful) ideas. Whilst the concepts can ultimately be applied to any branch of engineering, it is not going to offer the quick-fix, cookie-cutter methods for designing something. It does provide insightful clues to what lies behind everyday design decisions and processes.
