John R. Swanton was the most prolific author with the Smithsonian Bureau of American Ethnology. He produced twenty works on the American Indian, among them The Indian Tribes of North American and The Indians of the Southeastern United States.

Exhaustive information source, but no map

I ordered this book, based on the many references made to it in other publications. In terms of narrative content, it certainly lived up to my expectations, having more specific information on early Creek towns than anything else I had read. What is missing in this soft cover edition is a detailed map or maps, and that is terribly unfortunate in my case, since I needed it for reference. The listing on Amazon states that a map is included, which is not true and misleading for the buyer.

Extensive compilation of early Southeaster Indian Materials

Reviewed: Early History of the Creek Indians and their Neighbors by John R. Swanton, Smithsonian Institution, Bureau of American Ethnology, Bulletin 73, 1922, Government printing office, 10 folded maps included (brittle), 492 pages. (Note: this original had extra pages excised by the printer to make space for the map envelope and contents in the back.) Excellent compilation of historical information and research materials on these early American Indians. This is a general work and does NOT go into great depth on many things, especially material of later dates. It spans up to approximately the 1840's. The Maps are fabulous and a MUST have for the reader. NOTE: The maps are reproductions of maps made much earlier and thus are and (MAYBE more than I could discover) somewhat in error, but NOT in gross error for their time. For me this was/is a great love to read, in that nowhere is there anything comparable in it's scope. Highly recommended. Thanks, Harry!

Kindle version is without content, only the cover downloaded!

I really wanted to read this book, but the Kindle edition that was sent to me had nothing but cover, title page, and final page of the book. It was EMPTY!! Had to get a refund on it. I hope Amazon corrects this problem so I can order the the Kindle version and actually get a copy of this classic work to read.
