Entertaining book about the entertainment industry

I must confess that I was really interested in reading this book since back in the late 1980's I used to be an executive secretary in off-net television syndication for then Universal-MCA studios. So I came to this book with a bit of insider knowledge and a hope that the politics and inner workings of the television community had evolved to a higher level.
You really don't have to be too knowledgeable about the industry to enjoy this story about a woman who has risen through the ranks to a senior management position within the first-run division of a fictional television network. Now she's going for the true brass ring - the title of President behind her name- a rare achievement in this male dominated arena. And to complicate matters, she's got herself a boyfriend who is not in the industry and who's far more interested in her as a person - not a title.
The characters are extremely well developed and totally believable. I had no problem visualizing everyone I met and completely investing myself in their stories. There is a small but acceptable amount of name dropping (totally within the context of the story) and the sexual encounters are left more to the imagination and less to graphic descriptions. The dialogue flowed easily, the situations authentic, and although the outcome wasn't entirely unexpected - I had a wonderful time getting there. In fact I was annoyed this morning that I would not be re-joining the hectic, stressful, sexist, blood thirsty, creative, smart and entirely addicting world of television production. Not for everyone, but definitely a rush.
Lindy DeKoven has captured all of the highs and lows, and the best and the beasts of this industry in a book that is perfect for any woman at any age to enjoy. And although it doesn't take place on Wall Street or Main Street - I think most women will easily relate to this story of dealing with the boy's club mentality which prevails in so many industries today.
And as for my original hope that things in the television industry might have improved by now - it looks like we still have a lot of work ahead of us. But atleast it's good to know that there are still outstanding writers and creative women out there like the author who are getting a chance to show their stuff.

A fun, top down ride from valet park to studio VIP parking.

Told with an insider's keen insight into the vanity and insecurities of the world's most visible industry, the author draws the best and avoids the pitfalls from a career of vetting scripts for the TV marketplace. A glossy and snappy read that also highlights how this industry -- and business in general -- has sometimes smothered the aspirations and talents of women who bring a wealth of imagination and passion to the workplace, only to be humiliated and suppressed by a male management culture that spews sleeze and humiliation. A sexy yet relevant summer read that should carry over into the other seasons.

WOW!

I absolutely love this book. It's an incredible mixture of real life, drama, sexual harassment in the work place, the plight of women today, romance, and a woman torn between career and love.
Having recently watched a documentary that talked about how despite the fact the population of the U.S. is OVER 50% women, the percentage of women in politics is less than 17 and the number of women having a say in what goes on television is even smaller, I wasn't one bit surprised by the content in this novel. I mean, in a country over half women, who is representing them?
I thought the aviation industry was bad...In male-dominated professions, women are harassed and bombarded with inappropriate jokes and comments all day long. The television industry is even worse.
Alexis has been working her tail off and turning the other cheek at HBS industries for years. Suddenly, she's a victim of the Good Old Boys' System. She has to compete with the most appalling man and her former employer for a president's position...or risk working for him again--and little flashbacks show us just how bad it is to work for Jerry.
But then her job takes over her life...it seems it's okay for men to let this happen, but not women.
The story is heart breaking, insightful, humorous, frustrating...I went through every emotion imaginable in its 336 pages. I laughed, screamed, cussed, and cried.
Through her coworkers, we see the other forms of sexual harassment that go on. Men looking for affairs. Men ridiculing women. Men peeing and not closing the door. Behind the scenes drama regarding what's appropriate on TV. We see men who think they know what women want and don't have the first darn clue.
The romance was a really small part, but that story helped show us what happens when a job and/or a thirst for revenge consumes one to the point, they become incredibly selfish and self-absorbed...and lose it all.
I found this book really impacting and I'll never look at TV the same way again. Bit thumbs up to the author for handling this subject in an entertaining, yet thought-evoking manner.
