Good old fashioned story of crime and punishment placed in a world of swords, magic and strange creatures

Avarice: excessive or insatiable desire for wealth or gain (Merriam-Webster)
"Avarice" was not what I expected. Now that I have read it, I do not know exactly what I did expect. Perhaps something along the more traditional lines of paranormal police procedurals. "Avarice" is that, but to my relief there were no vampires or werewolves. Sometimes it is nice to read something different.
"Avarice" had humans interacting with Kirgani (somewhat catlike people) and Anuran (more humanlike in appearance, but with scales and weird eyes). Due to the interaction of these three races we get a sniff of racism. As "Avarice" is a police procedural we also get a bit of police bias from some of the public - guess which part of the public.
I got a clearer sense of who Cordonate Zhivana Nedrogovna was compared with Cordonate Parshan Koury. Perhaps that had to do with Parshan dealing with his grief and guilt connected with the loss of his previous partner (and lover). The two have one thing in common. Somehow they seem to get more or less unscathed through pretty severe situations. Something is up with that.
The mystery was straight-forward. Some things were clear to the reader early on in the story while others revealed themselves later on. In fact I would say that "Avarice" is a good old fashioned story of crime and punishment placed in a world of swords, magic and strange creatures.
I'm trying to decide if I deem "Avarice" a young adult novel. It is dark, but not too dark. There is no sex and the violence is pretty safe. If you can handle Agatha Christie and her likes, you can certainly handle "Avarice". I really enjoyed this meeting of minds.

Avarice combines the well-loved genres of mystery, crime solving, and fantasy, giving it terrific agility between action and social commentary. The story occurs in the free city of Pyrrh, in which live three different species of sentient creature: human, kirgani - described by the author as "like the Kajiit from the Elder Scrolls games:[...] but with a little more fox in them" and anuran - in the author's words, "The Anuran are more human. They are amphibious and have scales." Racial and social tensions exist between the three and are explored within the relationships between colleagues and adversaries solving a violent attack. Avarice displays these dynamics carefully, showing them without editorializing their existence. Avarice allows the reader to decide for himself.
The world building is extraordinary and the details are shared with great patience. The action of a late night mugging, the internal conflict within the law enforcement branches trying to solve the case, the political pressures from social groups all carry the story quickly along. Bellet does not labor over setting the scene, and doles out her descriptions carefully. It is as if she assumes that we can see the action unfolding before us, and therefore only needs to describe the appearance of the kirgani or anuran when they change or react to circumstances. It is an elegant form of fantasy, confident and self-secure in its world and its story. Avarice does not need to impress with how intricate its world is; it knows that you will appreciate it as it unfolds naturally from the plot. It is sophisticated.
Its sophistication does not make it pretentious. In fact, one could ignore the softly spoken social commentary about race or loyalty and just enjoy a good crime novel. In this manner, Bellet satisfies the audiences of mysteries and the audiences of fantasy. The result is compelling, exciting - and fun. Avarice is a satisfying and provocative introduction to what promises to be an enjoyable series.

Fun read

An interesting mystery story in a supernatural world. This book is about the new partnership between Par and Zhivana. In an unorthodox move, Zhivana had decided to transfer from the Watch into the crime district. What she wasn't expecting was to work with someone so moody. Par just lost his partner and is finding it hard to be nice...to anyone really. Meanwhile, a trail of dead bodies is found and these two must work together to figure out what's going on.
The story alternates between the viewpoints of Zhivana and Par. I enjoyed Zhivana's personality since, despite her recklessness, she has still shown herself to be calm and intelligent. She's also quite spunky. Usually recklessness and sass bores me because it's a formula used by teen books to the point of exasperation. I am pleased to see that Bellet managed to avoid this by balancing Zhivana with a good amount of restraint and maturity. Another thing I approve of is the platonic relationship between Zhivana and Par. Zhivana is in a steady relationship and, to my relief, not falling heads over heels in love with ol' dark and moody. I love it when authors get into character relationships but I don't want it to always end with love! I also approve of the interesting races in the city. None of them are vampires or werewolves. Can't ask for more than that.
Par, however, did not really interest me. He spent a lot of his chapters brooding and sending mixed signals to Zhivana, and by extension, to the readers. I don't know if this was on purpose or not but I didn't find it all that fun. I simply have no good grasp of his personality and so it's hard for me to empathize or care about him.
Overall, this book was a nice read. However, hardcore mystery fans might be a little disappointed. As the first book, it mostly establishes the main characters and their backstories. The crime itself wasn't particularly fascinating or brilliant. I've read enough mysteries for nothing to really surprise me. However, if you're not all that hardcore, I would definitely recommend you try it out. It's a relatively short and fun read!!
