In my books this tenacity and toughness is translated into a contemporary setting and a relationship with a woman who challenges his background and beliefs. This contrast and conflict is what makes a good story and I've exploited that basic difference to tell tales that bring out the best in both characters who come together as a couple.
In Blackfoot Affair the main characters are on opposite sides of a legal battle, and in An Indian Affair the hero is a renegade bounty hunter who meets a teacher he simply can't resist. In Medicine Man's Affair the hero is an athlete who has to defy his own prejudices to pursue a woman he doesn't want to desire, and in Marriage in Name Only a troubled teenager becomes a conflicted millionaire who can't forget his first love. When Heath finally learns to trust Jessica, a mature and enduring is created between the two lovers.

ESSAYS ON THE APPEAL OF THE ROMANCE NOVEL
The romance novel extends real life into fantasy and allows the reader to experience fulfillment and a happy ending every time with every story. Writers and readers agree that they understand the messages, the ethos, and the sheer entertainment value inherent in romances, and the two essays I wrote for DANGEROUS MEN AND ADVENTUROUS WOMAN are my attempt to explain the nature and the appeal of these books to the female reader. I can testify that these stories have an enduring allure because I am currently selling many of my earliest titles, some of them thirty years old, on the internet. They are as popular now as when I first wrote them (during my childhood, of course). Today they are reaching a new generation of readers electronically without the benefit of bookstores (and reminding some of my long time, faithful readers that I am still kicking and still writing after a long hiatus).
Early in my career, Jayne Ann Krentz (aka Amanda Quick) and I shared an editor at Harlequin, Patricia Smith. Pat asked me, along with eighteen other prominent romance authors including Sandra Brown, Diana Palmer, Elizabeth Lowell, Laura Kinsale and Mary Jo Putney, to help her create an anthology of essays on the subject of romances. The collection was designed to give readers, critics and academics some insights on the subject of why romance novels are so popular. This collaborative effort produced DANGEROUS MEN AND ADVENTUROUS WOMEN, edited by Smith and published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in1992, brought out in paperback by HarperMonogram in 1996. This collection of essays extols the benefits of reading and writing romances and explores why romance novels are so popular yet misunderstood by critics (and often the general public). I wrote two of the essays included in the collection, now available on Amazon, and they are described below.
In "Loved I Not Honor More: The Virginal Heroine in Romance," I explore the undeniable appeal of the heroine who has her first sexual experience with the hero of the story. I describe this appeal as undeniable because I receive the letters from and talk with the fans who read these stories, and they all share an enthusiasm for the tale which describes the inexperienced young lady who is initiated by the tough yet tender hero who simply can't resist her. Lots of other stories have their place in popular fiction too, but this one seems to endure endless variations and remain viable as long as certain basic criteria are met: she must be a newbie and he must love her as well as desire her. That said, everything else is up for grabs (so to speak). My essay explores why these elements are so necessary and so enduringly popular.
In "Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know," I look into the basic fantasy which sustains all romances, the idea that the supposedly weaker woman actually wins the battle of the sexes within the confines of a romance book because at its end she brings the macho, dominant hero to heel. As I say in the essay, "the hero may...give the heroine a terrible time...but in the end he capitulates because he simply must have her." I never tire of reading this scenario, and my fans don't either. The role reversal is delightful and seeing the toughest hero melt in the warmth of his lady's regard is emotionally satisfying and socially uplifting. We liked it then, we like it now, and we will always like it.
Publishers Weekly said about DANGEROUS MEN AND ADVENTUROUS WOMEN on its publication in 1992: "In 22 essays, romance novelists address why romances are popular. These authors are convincing when they simply write what they think, as when Sandra Brown flatly asserts that romances 'are fun--fun to write, fun to read, fun to dissect and discuss.'" This assertion is still true. The stories remain fun first of all, but the explanations provided by the authors in the collection might clarify for the reader exactly why these books are so enjoyable, and why they endure. I recommend this collection and hope you like it.
NATIVE AFFAIRS is an example of the type of collection which has made these stories popular. In all four books the heroes are tough but descent and the heroines are sympathetic and loyal but also feisty and capable. In each instance the attraction is immediate and the relationship is enduring. This quartet represents represents some of my best contemporary romances and I chose each selection for that reason.

About the Author
I am Doreen Owens Malek, author of over forty books and lifelong fan of romantic fiction. I live in PA with my husband and college student daughter, a mini dachshund and a sun conyer parrot. I would like to tell you a little about myself. I came to writing by a circuitous route, starting out as an avid reader of JANE EYRE and WUTHERING HEIGHTS and GONE WITH THE WIND and REBECCA and any other similarly themed books I could find. I first worked as a teacher and then graduated from law school when I desired a more lucrative and independent career. I had always been discouraged from pursuing a writing career by the volatile nature of the business and the relatively poor chance for success. But the realization that I needed a focus for the future encouraged me to do what I had always wanted to do. I sold my fledgling novel to the first editor who read it, and I have been writing ever since. I have written all types of books for all types of people, but my favorite literary pursuit is and always has been romance. Nothing is as rewarding as hearing from my readers, so please use my website to communicate your thoughts and criticisms, as I am always eager to learn from you. A romance novel rarely disappoints me: in an uncertain world filled with tragedy and sadness, reading about an appealing woman finding a strong man to love her and share her life is the perfect escape. I like to read and write stories in which the main characters overcome obstacles to get together, and then stay together because their mutual devotion cannot be denied no matter what else is happening around them. They always HELP each other and reinforce the quaint but enduring notion that love conquers all - at least in the fictional universe of my imagination. So pull up a chair and take down a book - or pick up a Kindle - and join me in a world where the heroes are tough and headstrong but never boorish and the heroines are feminine and sympathetic but never helpless.

Too many mistakes

I read books 1 & 2, the stories were basically the same. I read the same sentence in both books. The over use of adverbs was exhausting. There were too many mistakes that distracted me from the story line. I apologize for my critique, but I am being honest. I am unable to read the other two without being paid to point out the mistakes for a rewrite.

Drew a hard ass bounty hunter who had always been a man on the verge of violence with a player's heart, falls head over heels for Cindy!
Should Cindy take a chance or will she be heartbroken with her decision to love a man like Drew????

Four good book's

I enjoyed this set of books. At times your heart breaks for the people in these books. Nothing is harder to see when people build walls & roadblocks to avoid love & commitment. The love is there, the sex is perfect & fear ruins it all. All four of these books reflect that.
The only thing I have to say is who ever proof read these book's did a very poor job.
