Steve Siporin dates his love of movies to when he was five years old and was taken to Radio City Music Hall in New York City to see “Alexander’s Ragtime Band.” After a career in Hollywood’s movie studios he now lives in Palm Springs, CA, famous for its climate, film festivals, and streets named after movie stars.

Review of Crazy, Crazy Hollywood

Fun, easy to read, behind-the-scenes access to movies and TV shows we all know and love is presented as only Director of America Guild member Steve Siporin can serve up.

The movies and TV shows of Steve's life are peopled by talent such as: Paul Newman and Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Kirk Douglas hitchhiking (!) in his full Spartacus costume, Barbara Eden and Nanette Fabray, Elizabeth Montgomery in Bewitched, The Smothers Brothers, and, of course, James Arness and the Gunsmoke gang, among many, many others.

Steve's book is the first ever to reveal how and when "playback" birthed, and the difference between its offspring "dubbing" and "lip synching", which Madonna used at this year's Super Bowl half-time show. Plus, he explains lots of insider technical know-how like story points, and CGI and its use in animated movies.

He created the very first and original "Video Fireplace", used as story points in major motion pictures and TV shows, including BBC productions, a Mark Morris ballet, and as part of a Vienna, Austria art museum exhibit. You've probably been soothed by his original "Video Aquarium" in lobbies and waiting rooms everywhere. I have.

I liked this book. It's fun and informative. I'm buying copies for my friends.

Should be Required Reading for College Movie Courses

With easy prose and industry insight over years of experience, this book helps us understand the way the world works in the galaxy of movie making. Siporin bottled his memories of movies being made, stars working their craft, and the support crew doing their jobs in an enjoyable and educational read.

As in most industries, the vast array of workers in movies are not the face the public sees, nor will they ever take home a bonanza of cash for their work. But they typically earn a good living and are essential to the job. In this book we see not only the well known names, but some of the lesser known along with the cook's secret of how all these ingredients come together to make entertainment.

It is my opinion this book should find its way into every college course on movie appreciation or introduction to making movies.

My only problem with the book, is that NOW I feel I need to go find all the movies mentioned and find those special circumstances in making each one inside the film - so I can both re-appreciate the film ... AND appreciate the work behind it. This is going to take a long long time. Well, at least it will be a fun project !

A FAST, ENTERTAINING SUMMER READ

So many books about Hollywood are about "me!" Not this very interesting book. The author goes beyond what he saw and explains how things work in and on Hollywood sets and locations! I never understood "green screen" or "Computer Generated Images (CGI). Now I do. Thanks for a book that is full of surprises. Oh yes, I always wondered why the Gene Kelly's and Judy Garland's were never out of breath as they sang and danced up a storm. Now I know. It's in the book! A good read!

Very simplistic writing

I read A LOT. And before I buy a book, I look through the reviews. This book had far more very good reviews than bad. So I bought it and read it. And after reading the book, I have no idea why it had so many "excellent" reviews.

The writing is extremely simplistic. One other reviewer described it as monotone. I have to agree. I felt like the whole book was an outline of what could have been a very interesting fantasy novel. I usually devour a book in about 4 hours. This book took me 5 days to slog through. The only multi-dimensional character is the main character. The rest are simply sketches. The dialog does not flow and is very clunky. Much more time should have been spent on her training and interactions with other students and teachers. More description should have been used to flesh out her relationship with her familiars. Her familiars are called 'my darlings' but I had no sense of deep affection. There was no description of her communication with the animals other than statements that she directed them to do something and she could see and hear through their eyes and ears. The love interest is extremely flat. She fell in love with him in what? 5 days? Maybe? There's no description of his character other than he is a womanizer and handsome. I soon got bored with the plot: they went to this town and the gypsies put on a show and she killed some people, then they went to another town and they put on a show and she killed some people, then they went to another town and the exact same things happened... As far as the actions scenes went, they were ok. I felt like the whole intuition vs logic thing got old quickly. Also, her besting her enemies seemed pretty simplistic. There were really no elaborate plots or escapes or fights. Her enemies were extremely stupid; I didn't feel that her intelligence was THAT intelligent. As far as her readings of people, I felt that a lot more description should have gone into that. They way the readings are described it's like her tellings just come from nowhere. What were the subtle clues she was seeing that her tellings were crafted from? I understand why she could figure out if a customer was an assassin or not, but the other parts of her tellings seemed to come out of left field. Lastly, the ending of the book was a complete let-down. It was wrapped up way too quickly and easily.

If you're looking for a book to simply pass time, then buy it. But if you're looking for a book to really get into, I would not recommend this.

Absolutely Amazing Read

I was looking for a halfway decent book to pass the time, instead I found a new author to follow. First off the question I always have with lower priced books - it is a full length novel, not a short story. Ryana was very relatable and likeable. The author lets us see her doubts and fears and her feelings of unworthiness this just makes her so much more of a relatable and likeable main character. I'm surprised more people haven't stumbled across this book as it is extremely good. The author has done a good job of descibing what story line is so I don't think I can add much to that. There is magic in the world but it is definitely not the main point or element of the story. If you're wavering on buying this book all I can say is do it because you will be pleasantly surprised.

Sweet, Tragic and beyond Excellent

Expecting little beyond the traditional formula Fantasy novel, I was beyond surprised at this gem. It was recommended by Amazon among several Urban Fantasy Romances and so I was falsely, but pleasantly led astray.

The main character Ryana grabs your heart in the first few pages and never lets go. As her troubles loom ever greater, and her life spins further and further out of her control, you find yourself turning page after page to follow the story of one we quickly have come to love.
While other characters are not treated as fleshed out and fully realized, they are by no means cardboard cutouts.

The action and intrigue is more than sufficient for the most avid addict. The scenes, both combat and non-combat, are written well, with the action pleasingly detailed. Especially as we soon realize that Ryana is not the invulnerable super hero as of so many tales.

The novel is well spell checked and other than a couple missing words, and a very few what felt to be slightly awkward sentence structures, it seems to be without real flaws.

I will be eagerly seeking out other works by this collaboration.

Misleading Title

This book was not formatted properly, judging by the poor content and coverage of PUR foams. It appears to be written by someone that barely knows their chemistry. The book is absent of useful information; it is also overpriced for content. This was a book written by a scam artist.

Delivery Problem

UPS has not informed me that book is in the customs.
For this I had to pay for keeping the book in shelves of the custom ( 20 € ) and additional 15 € custom.
I had to go 60 km to pick up the book. So the did not deliver to my address .

Leonardo da Vici was born on 15 April 1452 in the town of Vinci, the illegitimate son of the notary Ser Piero da Vinci and a peasant woman called Caterina. His childhood spent in the Tuscan countryside inspired in him a life-long passion for the observation and depiction of nature.

When he was seventeen, he moved to Florence, where his talent for drawing impressed the great master Verrocchio who took him on as a pupil.

Leonardo da Vinci worked for such powerful patrons as Ludovico da Sforza, Duke of Milan; Cesare Borgia; Cardinal Giuliano de Medici, brother of Leon X; and for the French king Francois I at Amboise, where he died in 1519.

It has become fashionable to speak of 'Leonardo the artist' and 'Leonardo the scientist' as if he had been some schizophrenic genius torn between two disparate pursuits and therefore rarely, if ever, able to accomplish anything in either. But Leonardo's own contemporaries, though impatient of his volatility, master himself such a dichotomy would have been incomprehensible. To say that as 'a man of the Renaissance' he believed that a painter needed the aid of anatomy, perspective, optics and so forth is not a proper answer. In fact, these alleged 'scientific' studies of Renaissance artists were a fashion confined to a small circle. In any case, Michelangelo and Raphael to name only two outstanding examples - did not share these interests but were great artists nonetheless. Leonardo's inquiries were rooted in his personality, not in some tendency of the age, and many of his notes and drawings having nothing to do with the tasks awaiting painters of his time. They are not a vast store from which to draw raw materials for his art, nor was his art simply a finely distilled compound of observations and imagination.
In fact, many of Leonardo da Vinci's drawings are different from those of his contemporaries and those by artists from any other period. Of course, there are among them rapid sketches from life, portraits, quick notes for compositions, elaborate cartoons, drapery studies, designs for machines, buildings, drawings of plants and animals, anatomical and proportion studies. But it is their nature which is so often peculiar. The plans of buildings grow before our eyes like the cells of some organism, plants appear on the same sheet both in bud and in flower, trees are drawn schematically to demonstrate the principle of growth, there is a drawing of the peaceful Arno valley, and there are the cataclysmic visions of utter physical destruction of the world. The grotesque heads - to call them caricatures is a misnomer - are combinations and variations of human forms creating a morphological sequence of types. The anatomical drawings demonstrate not only the position of muscles and tendons or the bone structure, they also show the embryo in its mother's womb and a bare skull, - the beginning and end of life. All these drawings are concerned not just with the collection of visual data useful to the painter but with the processes of life, with growth and decay, whether in plants, beast, man, or the world at large. The same is true of Leonardo's designs for his various mechanical contrivances which are so often engines of construction or destruction.

Leonardo da Vinci's notes should be considered in the same context. It is perhaps a pity that we have got used to thinking of them as if they had been written in preparation for some comprehensive treatise on painting. But it should be remembered that the huge manuscript known as Trattato della Pittura is not a autograph. It was compiled in the sixteenth century, probably by Francesco Melzi, from no less then eighteen of the original notebooks. The result certainly is a labor of love, but nevertheless this gathering divided into eight chapters is too rigid, too much like a textbook to reveal Leonardo da Vinci's truly dynamic nature...
