"The thing with avenging someone is that the victims who deserve it the most are always the ones who'd want it the least."
Boston private investigator Alex Rourke has had to overcome personal tragedy and the emotional trauma it's caused to him before. But that's nothing to what he faces when the disappearance of a young man from a tough part of town takes him to the back country of northern Vermont. Adam Webb wasn't the first person to vanish in this stretch of the Green Mountains, and he won't be the last. Ghost towns, drug trafficking, blood and violence, all secrets buried beneath the stark, clean white of the January snows.
With everything Alex holds dear either taken from him or quickly slipping through his grasp, keeping his sanity - and his life - will mean getting to the root of the evil in the frozen state. If he still wants either of those things, that is...
THE TOUCH OF GHOSTS: WRITER'S CUT is a heavily rewritten and re-edited version of a novel first published by Penguin in 2003. While both this and the original form of the story are mysteries, the redrafting process for the original turned the story largely into a conventional whodunnit - a form it was thoroughly ill-suited to - whereas at the time of first writing, the idea behind it was to create a crime thriller exploring the different ways people deal with loss and tragedy, where solving the crime took second place to coming through events with your humanity intact, and without grief and anger turning you into the very thing that had hurt you in the first place.
This novel is the first in the newly-reworked Alex Rourke series of stories.

From the Author
The Touch Of Ghosts: Writer's Cut is a heavily-rewritten and re-edited version of a book first published by Penguin in 2003. While both this and the original form of the story are mysteries, the redrafting process for the original turned the story largely into a conventional whodunnit - a form it really wasn't suited to. I had to twist it into a semi-police procedural even though the main character wasn't a cop, and this stretched believability quite horribly. It also added a lot of unnecessary material that served merely as red herrings for the reader, and that never sat too well with me either.
What I'd originally planned at the time of first writing was to create a crime thriller exploring the different ways people deal with loss and tragedy, obsession and guilt, where solving the mystery took second place to coming through events with your humanity intact, and without grief and anger turning you into the very thing that had hurt you in the first place. A theme which then carries on through the rest of the series as Alex slowly tips further over the edge.
I didn't have the experience or the skill to do that back then - I was only 24 and this was only my second published novel - but with the rights to the book back in my hands, ten years down the line, I had the ideal opportunity to turn it back into what it should have been all along. It's been massively rewritten and very heavily cut, and I'm much happier with the result than with its previous incarnation.
The Touch Of Ghosts will be the first of three writer's cuts of the old books (The Darkness Inside is up next, followed by Burial Ground), before entirely new stories carry on the Alex Rourke series.
(You might also look at my author page, or know the original versions, and wonder what the other book, the earliest book, Winter's End, is and how it fits in. The short answer is: it's best to think of it as the pilot episode to a TV show, with the season proper starting here. If you've read it, it won't do any harm, but it's totally unnecessary. This is where everything starts for real. I don't have the rights to that early novel, but for what it's worth if I did and gave it the same treatment, there's almost nothing that I'd keep. Some people like it, but it's very first-booky, cheesy, especially at the end, and... you get the picture. I'm not a big fan.)
So I genuinely hope you enjoy The Touch Of Ghosts in all its shiny new glory, and I hope you stick around for the rest of the series.

Super read.

This was one good read.
Alex Rourke is an ex FBI agent. He and another ex agent Robin Garrett are now PI's. They also conduct seminars for law enforcment in Boston.
Robin Garrett is a good friend to Rourke as well as his boss. Garrett had been an FBI field agent and Rourke had been a specialist in the Bureau's NCAV violent crimes division. Rourke has loads of baggage. A fact that doesn't deter Garrett from being his friend and boss.
Their PI outfit, Robin Garrett Associates, are investigators, process servers, business security and criminal consultants. Missing person is something of a stock in trade.
Colleen Webb is a client. She's looking for her missing son. A son who was last heard from several months ago. According to Webb her son contacts her frequently so she's sure something isn't right. The last tiime he contacted her he was in Burlington, Vt.
Rourke has a girlfriend, Gemma Larson by name. She's a medical examiner based in Newport, Vermont. Rourke is based in Boston and they have a long distance love affair going on. Rourke loves Gemma and has been thinking of the M word.
So begins one pretty damned good read.
Rourke heads to Vt to look into the Webb case. Gemma is shot to death in her car while driving to meet Rourke.
This one is full of murder, crooked cops, missing persons, the heroin trade and Rourke doing his best to figure it all out while dealing with the death of Gemma.
Just a great read. To bad Alex didn't get em all. Five Stars and then some.

Masterful

I'm really not sure why THE TOUCH OF GHOSTS is so cheap. It's a fantastic page-turner, full of intrigue, atmosphere, and interesting characters. The premise is strong and believable, and Rickards keeps the tension up throughout. A former Penguin author, Rickards has the chops (and the talent) to be up on the Hardback shelves. It really shines through in this Writer's Cut, which is as good as anything out there.
Frankly, this book should be carrying a $10.99 price tag. Grab it while you can. You won't regret it.
