Real

Zola Levitt was on TV for many years before he died the other year with cancer. He was just a small ministry that was concerned only with ministering. This series he had on the 7 feasts of Israel was one of his best. It truly brought to light the scriptures. Zola was an original. He didn't ask for money or put on a big show. It was just one half hour each week of good bible study. He will truly be missed. His wife Sandra continues the ministry with Jeffrey Seif. We need more people like Zola Levitt Ministries.

The most incredible study booklet ever written!

I read this book several times over the last 13 years and it remains a favorite study guide for me. Absolutely incredible that anyone could put so much information into so few pages. Clearly God was with Zola when he wrote this book. For anyone interested in purchasing this book, it may be bought directly from Zola Levitt Ministries for about three dollars. Why it is so expensive from the sellers listed on Amazon, I have no idea. I would highly recommend this book to anyone believer or not. It is very thought provoking and remarkably simple to read.

This book is probably the best buy I have ever made. It is so completely eye opening that I cannot even express in words how I feel about it. I will try though.

After 20 years of turning my back on Messiah and Christianity in general due to lack of any meaningful upbringing, and lack of any meaningful understanding, I have finally found my Beloved Savior for the first time. I began my quest to know God the Father and Jesus the Son by reading my Bible for the first time all the way through. While I gained some knowledge I know most of it slipped by me and that is when I began searching for a deeper truth.

And I found this treasure of truth by Zola Levitt. What a gift we are given and it has been hidden in plain sight right in front of our eyes the entire time.

Thank you Zola Levitt for helping ones like me gain a better appreciation of the amazing gift of our Messiah.

If you are a Christian, a Follower of Jesus Christ, a believer in Messiah... and you do not know the meanings of the Feasts of Israel, aside from basic surface knowledge of them, you must read this book. I guarantee it will change your whole understanding and take you deeper spiritually.

This is almost a version of city mouse country mouse, except these two friends from different families, come together and work together to make everyone happy. I liked the way the two main characters have their story told, side by side, allowing children to see the clear similarities. A nice story which became a fast favourite with the kids (3yrs & 6yrs).

Kind of meh, neither good nor bad

The premise of this story is that there are 2 mice, Clayton and Desmond, who both want to get the biggest Christmas tree ever. They undertake completely parallel attempts to acquire said biggest Christmas tree ever, fail, realize they should work together, and ultimately decide to go in together on the biggest Christmas tree ever, which they share.

Could be a decent premise, but it's told in an uninteresting way, as we are basically told the same story twice (Desmond's attempt to get the tree and Clayton's attempt to get it), and nothing surprising or funny happens.

It's a fine story, nothing offensive about it, but nothing that great, either. I was expecting something much more charming and interesting based on the reviews here. After one reading my 2 year-old never mentioned it again, and I ended up donating it (returning it to amazon would have cost me more than the price of the book).

I'd save your pennies on this one and go for something more entertaining.

A feeling for the Raj

Paul Scott was of course not the first non-Indian novelist to write about India. Some of the best names in this list includes such luminaries Rudyard Kipling, John Masters, E.M. Forster and of course Salman Rushdie. But what differentiates the oeuvre of other writers from that of Scott is the fact that they appeared to view their subject from the perspective of an outsider looking in. It was essentially reportage from a distance. On the other hand, The India Scott evokes in these books is so vivid that you feel as if you are actually one of the protagonists in these inter-connected stories, thrust willingly or otherwise into the maelstrom of smells and stinks and the clichéd heat and dust that was India during the twilight days of the British Raj - and something that hasn't changed much either since then. (This authenticity is appreciated a lot more when the reader happens to possess also some social or ethnic connections to India. John Lennard perhaps alludes to this in this book when he refers to the "observant wisdom Indian readers find in [Scott]".) This warmth and understanding that is so evident in Scott's writing is also astonishing when one realises that any personal experience that Scott could have tapped into is based on the meager time he spent in the sub-continent and Malaysia between 1943 and 1946 and the few weeks' research trip back in India in 1964.

In a similar vein, I was pleasantly surprised at the knowledge, warmth and sensibility for the subject that John Lennard exhibits in this book. He displays an extensive knowledge of not only the British Raj but also the social and political milieux of the sub-continent around the middle decades of the twentieth century. This is of course attested by the rather long bibliography included in the book. Nevertheless, some of Lennard's descriptions of India and the terms he employs - for example using the word sannyasi rather than the more common sadhu, saint or mendicant - and also the author's apparent familiarity with works like R.K. Narayan's 1955 book "Waiting for the Mahatma" is clearly an illustration of his diligence in gaining a more esoteric understanding of the landscape of the Raj. The book is made more enjoyable when such erudition is accompanied by Lennard's delectable prose.

One little issue I had with this book is Lennard's attempt to find parallels between the psyches of Ronald Merrick - one of the central characters in the Raj Quartet - and Paul Scott himself. It is no doubt commonplace for authors to endow some of their own personal traits on to some of their characters. By the same token, one of the pleasures of reading is for us to be able to relate closely with some of the players in the drama. Nonetheless, I got the feeling Lennard was attempting - rather unconvincingly - to over-analyse the similarities between Merrick and his creator. Because of this, I gave only four stars for this book, albeit with great reluctance.

Really useful guide for a non-academic reader

This is a really great guide to and discussion of Paul Scott's Raj quintet. My understanding is that the author intends it to be used as a college-level reading guide. I consider myself a very thoughtful reader but I'm not enough of a heavyweight to start digging through the more erudite papers out there to see what resonates (nor am I going to shell out $50/article via the academic databases). So this little packet of historical background and critical analysis was exactly what I needed. My only complaint is with the "Merrick as antagonist" section, which is definitely very interesting, but seems to me to have elbowed out a potentially even more interesting discussion of the "Philoctetes" theme.

Decoding the Fading Raj as Protrayed by Paul Scott in his Quartet Plus One

I read the Raj Quartet and Staying On essentially straight through, transfixed once I developed a feel for the first volume and the technique used by Paul Scott. I found that technique a bit frustrating at first, perhaps tantalizing, but soon none of that mattered because the writing was so wonderful that I just let myself be carried along by the words. There was a bit of detail that I couldn't quite follow because the vocabulary of the dying Raj was obscure to me at times, as were the occasional terms from Hindi, etc. This volume has helped me understand subtleties that I didn't catch and I feel ready to re-read all five volumes with a sharper eye and ear for the storyline and characters.

Just Bad

Wow, I've honestly never read so many positive reviews for something so terrible before. Usually I agree with the majority of reviewers, or at least some of them, so maybe it's just me being off the pulse here but this book is NOT good. I'm giving it two stars because the editing wasn't too terrible, the idea for the story was good, and the price was right. Nothing else about this book works.

Just a few of the multitude of issues (SPOILER ALERT):

There is absolutely NO character development. This book, in the end, spans 8 years. You would expect that, in that time, the reader would come to know more about the relationship between the hero and heroine than that they love each other and have strong sexual chemistry. WHY do they love each other? As far as I can tell, Lexi loves Lan because he's hot. No, seriously, that seems to be the only possible explanation because he is a HUGE jerk. And why does Lan love Lexi? She keeps his child from him for SIX YEARS and it takes him two days to forgive her and try to get her back? And it's not just the love story that is lacking. The supporting characters are underdeveloped, as well. Ryan basically abuses Lexi from the very beginning, but we never really understand his motivation, and the whole thing just lacks suspense altogether. Trish is naive and stupid. I'm pretty sure we're meant to think she's quirky, but it just doesn't work. The sad part is, these characters have real potential. Lan spends years in the Marines that we NEVER hear about. He owns a bar they only ever seem to have sex in his office in. Trish is in vet school and dating the brother of the girl Lan cheated on Lexi with. Adam is Lan's half-brother from another mother. Lexi is in an abusive relationship. And we don't get any exploration of ANY of that.

The tired "Surprise, you're the father of my multiple years old child and I never told you" bit. This only works when the author provides some kind of feasible excuse for that behavior. As far as I can tell, Lexi was just selfish and hurt. She has no excuse, and her weak posturing doesn't do her any favors. For a better book with this plot line, with more editing issues, read "Seduction and Snacks" by Sivec.

The weak conflict. Beyond the whole baby thing, the secondary "suspense" element to this story seems to be Ryan's penchant for attacking Lexi. This happens sporadically and for no reason that I can find. There's no build up, and Lexi doesn't even seem to really care that much in the end. I'm pretty sure an abusive relationship with this stalker aspect would traumatize anyone.

Bottom line? Do yourself a favor and skip this book.

Unredeemable Hero

Overall, this book was okay. The writing was okay and both protagonists were a annoying and selfish at times but they were not totally unlikable if you look at them from a bigger perspective. My main issue is I just couldn't get over Lan's cheating.

I understand why a situation like this happened with these characters; they were in high school...confused, scared and about to graduate. We can even blame it on the alcohol because sure, Lan was drunk out of his mind at that time...but the fact that he had sex with another girl in some toilet where everybody can hear what was going on plus also knowing that his girlfriend was in the same party? Even if she was lucky (or unlucky...I'm not really sure) enough not to hear the whole deed happening from the outside, is he that stupid to think that this won't get to her eventually? I mean, he's drunk but he wasn't that drunk.

It was hard to get over their initial break up because I think the right decision has been made. I like jealous and possessive heroes but coming from Lan it was just a big pile of bull for me. Then again, Lexi's taste in men still turned out to be absolute crap and she did some stupid and selfish things out of spite herself so maybe they do deserve each other.

I finished this book because I wanted to find out if there was any way to redeem a character after being caught cheating red-handedly. Shockingly, Lan telling Lexi "I didn't even come" doesn't save him in my eyes. Yes, I was being sarcastic.

Main protagonists are selfish people that should grow up before have children

The fact that Landyn cheated on Lexi was bad enough..but this book suppose to be a reconciliation and reunion of both of them.....But all i got is descriptive sex scenes of lexi with that other guy she was with and reading how "fantastic her sex life was with him" What a turn off!!! i want to read about Lexi and Landyn not OTHER GUY!

I am not interested in heroine and OM having sex and life together...this is not what i want to read about and i am very disappointed at that.....my mind is full of images of Lexi with the OM having sex and it disgust me...

Another turn off...WHY SHE KEPT THE BABY FROM LANDYN?... I understand she was hurt..but it had nothing to do with her daughter not knowing her own father was very selfish....she should put her pride aside and let her daughter claim her rights to know her own father and not building a life with someone else...depriving her own daughter her rightful relationship with her own father!

her reason for keeping her pregnancy a secret was very egoistical and unacceptable in my book! What Landyn did was very bad but he did not deserved to keeping his own child from him

This book is too selfish for me to enjoy it!...And now I will do whats best for me.....

I will find myself another book with normal selfless people in it
